Mary Kay Bergman
1961-1999
I was saddened to learn of the death of
one of my favorite voice-over actors, whose voice you
probably know in many more ways than you suspect.
Mary Kay was the sort of person who could
light up a room just by entering. She was a joy to
work with and made me look good as a novice voice-over
director. It was therefore even more shocking when
I learned that she had taken her own life.
I was privileged to work with Mary
Kay on three projects, Leisure Suit Larry 6, 7,
and Larry's Casino. In Larry 6, she
played Cavaricchi Vuarnét and Char Donay.
In Larry 7, she played the roles of Drew
Baringmore, Jamie Lee Coitus and Wydoncha
Jugg. In Larry's Casino, she reprised those
roles and again made them much funnier than my feeble
writing.
While you Larry fans may remember those
characters, I'm sure you never caught on that they
were all the product of one incredibly talented set
of vocal cords. What's even more surprising is the
rest of her resume.
Mary
Kay was all of the female voices on all
of the South Park shows, including the
recent movie! She was Disney's "official voice of"
Snow White. She was Quasimodo's mother
in Hunchback of Notre Dame. And her list
of credits just went on and on. This
story on CNN tells it better than I. Below are
some other links to show you just how creative and
versatile she was.
Her family and friends created an Internet
guestbook that overflowed with messages.
Goodbye, Mary Kay. I hope that now
you have finally found the joy you so easily gave to
all of us while you were here.
