Let's see, I was 16 when TSN came out, so who knows how young I was, when I first played LL1... Never got 5, 6, 7 =( Maybe I'll go pick up the Pleasure Pack!

I just love LSL. Too bad it had to end. Perhaps another team should be put together to create #8? With Al on top ofcourse :) Seriously. LSL 8 has to be released! We're getting fed up with all those 3D action games, and want some good old adventure games, with the plain recognisable characters. Who of us didn't like the larry series, or the police quest series? Don't give up and bring out the LSL 8 ! (and if possible nine and ten too :) )

March 29, 2000

Hey yo, Al! I thought about Larry 8 once again: If you do it (and you've got Millions of fans behind you) you should do it like Larry 7: Paint it! The animations were good. But you can do them better. The movies were good, but they can be even fantastic! And the sound was good, but... you know what I'am talking about! Don't ya? You improve Leisure Suit Larry 7 Love For Sail, give it an even better story and name it Larry 8! That's it, folks! I would buy two copies of it! Okay, see you later, Manuel

Manuel

March 28, 2000

Hi again! I thought about Larry 8, from which I hope you work on, my pal Al: I don't like the idea that it is/should be in 3D. I liked the way the grafic was in Larry 7. Okay, I know, the graphic also has to develope. But rendering? No, that's not the style of Leisure Suit Larry. Not a 3D game. That's not the style of Al Lowe. Work on the paintings. Work on the engine, so that we don't see any bad graphic anymore (no more big pixels etc.) And then Larry is better than ever. I think Larry 7 Love for Sail is the best Larry-Game in the history. So don't do Larry 8 in 3d. I am talking about Larry 8, but where is it? So, if you do it, take my tip! Thanks for your attention, Your big fan Manuel PS: Later I want also to make my own computergames. So, when I am 18 and come to America (and you still live) - do you have a job for me?

Manuel

I love the larry series..laughed & loved them all..cept I'm really havin a problem with 7..I find myself becoming frustrated with the "verb typing crap" I've been playing the game for close to a mth now & am less than 500 points.. I don't want a walk through or serious hints.. but a list of possible verbs would have been nice Al.. I've won all of the other games in the series but.. this one seems to have a strange set of rules.. cmon al..or someone.. what am i missin? Roberta & Ken can F*** off!! yer still alright AL!!

Al I've enjoyed your Leisure Suit Larry series ever since I copi.....er....borrowed a part one from a friend. You managed to create a character that was able to survive in the fast paced world of computer gaming without loosing its charm. Larry was the little pervert that existed in everyone but some people were afraid to show that side of themselves and these games gave them the chance to be what they wanted....a middle aged guy in a polyester suit with a bad comb over. Anyway, thanks for the hours of enjoyment and I hope the series will soon have another chance to prove its worth.

Hello! I am a huge Leisure Suit Larry fan. I've got LSL 1, 1 VSG???, 2, 3, 5, both number 6. And the Larry utilities. Though I've looked for it here in Norway, I've only seen number 7 once, when I bought my first LSL game, number 6. I remembered LSL from my childhood, when I visited my uncle and family, and his son sat and played LSL 1. That will be forever printed in my brain. I've almost given up searching for number 7, since I am told that Sierra doesn't send them out anymore. It wil forever be a great loss for me. Hope that you still, for many years can make adventure games, though the LSL series is over. My wishes, HÅVARD JACOBSEN REIGSTAD!!!!

Al... Everyone here speak the truth... Sierra is not much without Larry, you know it makes me pissed that they would make you, but a faithful and loyal servant to go, everyone must see that there are clear signs of insanity on their part here. PEOPLE, er I mean every one who reads this, support Al Lowe, e-mail Sierra day and night! PROTEST!!! STRIKE!!! TELL THEM WHAT WE WANT!!! Because if Sierra is convinced that Lust in Space will sell, they will take Al up on it and that my fellow fans is what we what! I say, let everyone know how many Larry fans there are out here, if we fight we can help Al to continue on with his creation. Let the world know!!! Thanks for your time, peace and to us all godspeed, by the way Al, you RULE!!! Oh, and I am not 10 years old...

PART 2 Shaking innocent little hands and she sent me on my way outside to the dark cold Coaresgold weather, When I arrived back to Sydney and the Ropeburn around my neck slowly began to heal (Ok I'm being a TAD Dramatic) I received a letter From Ken saying thanks for the Vegemite which was nice and said next time I went to Coarsegold I could have my own personal Tour, Well I was a happy little Go-Getter, but sadly by the time I was 18 and had the money to go back (98) Sierra slowly evaporated and dissapeared and the Harsh Sting Of Coaresgold but my fragile Little Heart once more! But the truth is I would endure that a million times For just ONE MORE LARRY GAME!!!!! So I want all of you to chip in, Stop donating to Charaties, dont give money at church and alll put your money together and buy the rights to Leisure Suit Larry and give them back to Poor Al, if not do it for poor little Dane who travelled the world for Sierra and Larry! Hi AL and lesserfolk! You proberly dont remember me, I wrote to Sierra numerous times because I was such an innocent little fan, and whilst little at the time I managed to buy every Larry game available with my grubby little hands, I managed to get the autographs of practically the entire staff of Sierra of the early ninties, I was such a happy little Chap, then before I was visiting America my mother wrote a letter to sierra asking about visits and tours and things, and they kindly sent us a letter back explaining all about those things so eventually when I arrived in the US of A I ran as fast as my little legs could carry me to Sierra Studios (Well my parents drove most of the way) and only to find out that they were changing location (this was 1994) I showed them the letter but they said they didn't have any tours available at the moment, I asked to see Ken Williams because I brought him and the staff some Tasty Aussie Vegemite! The Secretary Grumbled and snatched the vegemite from my emotionally crippled Shaking innocent little

Make a script for Larry 8, and change the characteres name and get another company to produce it. Everyone will know that it is an unofficial sequel, just like Alpha Centauri is the unofficial sequel to Civilization!

You promised me that I would be happy when I rode this site !... I was (I'm a HUGE Larry fan) but I was also wery sad !.. Goodgye Mary Kay Bergman .

It pains me to know that Sierra has turned into something totally different from what everyone remembers. I should have done my research because then I would have known about the money problems (which you did tell me) and the new management. One of the top game design companies known for a slew of high quality games is now only known for two. Half-Life and of course your bouncing baby bachelor. There's even a site (I forgot which) that has a poll as to which company disappoints you the most. No surprise that it was Sierra. That hurts.

What I wanted to tell you is that one of these days it's going to blow up in everyone's face. I'm into most forms of entertainment. I'm working on a graphic novel, trying to get money for a film short, developing my own graphic adventure idea and even thinking about joining my friend on her website venture. All of this is on a very, I think the term is, grassroots level. I know what you're saying about money, but I'm still young and I want to love something before I go straight. Hopefully, I'll be able to do it for life (I'd love to hear your music).

What I see now is people lazily going about making everyone happy. There should be no such thing as a CGI Yoda! Sooner or later (probably later) we'll realize what's out there and demand some quality.

Every ten years the old generation starts to show itself in it's children. I'm asking only that you keep that wonderful imagination you have. If you look at Resident Evil, the brilliant Final Fantasy series and the many games out there with CG cut-scenes you'll see a little bit of the past there.

It's good to be social, don't get me wrong, but the multiplayer is becoming the standard. I'm sure you have DVD's that you and your family can watch. A good action movie that everyone can get excited over. There are, lurking somewhere in the collection, personal films that you can relate to. Video games are at that level, but they got here at the wrong time. In this age of 'what fad can we pimp next', the gamers are getting first rate systems that play third (or 97th) rate games. If you don't have a good series going, then throw some more patches on that broadband version of 'Don't Wait To See The Whites Of Their Eyes'.

If there are so many people in that vast cyber world then why is Larry alone (again!)? Larry is all alone again, but at the same time with everyone. Books and Films are one thing, but it's rare that a video game character can become it's own being. You are the only one I can think of who's done it. You served your purpose on this plane, I believe and made people smile.

You don't have to do it again. That's not what I'm saying. You should be a household name though.

I know what everyone wants and I want it too, but what I see is a talent, not a character. I'd like to see one more 'matured' version of Larry. Let him win and then go in peace. You, on the other hand are larger than the Internet. I don't want to see you get lost in the sea of search engines.

"Oh, I remember him. He made that game with that guy."

Not that there all bad, but some of these games have no heart. I remember when rap became accepted. When comic books became accepted. Before these video games go down I would love to see you and maybe Tim Schafer GET DOWN and do what Tony Alva and Tony Hawk did for skateboarding: Bring it to the forefront without letting it lose it's heart.

Maybe in my future I could develop one of your scripts into a movie (or give you all the money you want to make more games), but until then...

...you are etched in the mind of every old school gamer.

PS: You're not going to believe this, but my wife works for a financial company and one day, when greeting a client, she asked his name. It was Larry Laffer. What a geek!

Hi Al,

I read your interview with the German Magazine PC-Games and after i read it i cant find words to tell you how f**ked Sierra is. What the hell are they waiting for? I mean you created Larry and Designed Games for so long years and now they keep their fucking Copyrights in their fucking safes. And why dont you find another publisher? Well Al, If i become once rich, you can count on me!!

Spiros Chantzaras (16) Germany

I have to tell you I hope you get to make another leisure suit larry game I will be the first in line to get it they really dont make walk yhrough games like that anymore most people are into those shoot um up games but I would rather sit down and play one of you creations to this day i still play 5 and love for sale I cant Find my original number 1 copy which i hate but what are you going to do its not they sell it anymore. Thank for taking the time to read this I just wanted to say I love your humor and work you put into The leisure series and I hope to see another with your name in the credits.

Hey Al,

Just wanted to let you know that as a loyal LSL player (learned to type on lsl 1 on my tandy 1000 in 1990) I really miss your stuff. You brought a true contrast (lsl/softporn vs, disney) to the gaming world in it's infancy, and since I lost track of you and Jane Jensen, I havent seen a good thing come out of Sierra since Half-Life, which isn' really in the same category as your single player masterpieces. On behalf of the gaming world: make fore stuff, I'll even help with sound, I have a degree in audio engineering (and I'm Canadian, so I can work cheap). Really though, just wanted to say, thanks for teaching me to tyepe!!!

Mike Bourgeault

Hi Al,

Or shall i say Mr. Lowe? I don't know. First of all imagine you can read all this "I love your Games" and "Your the greatest Designer" Stuff here. I think thats faster and more econimic ;)

And finally some ideas:    like i mentioned in the GB how about making a paypal account for "Save Larry Laffer". So we could probably get some Money for the Laffer Licence. I could sleep better if Larry's Name is in it's Dads hands ;)

And even if it won't be enough how about makin a Larry game without it. Gary Fleffner or sth like this. I can imagine that there will be friends and fans who develope for free. i'm common to it cuz i come from the MOD scene. There are great Free Engines on the Net. Oh btw. i do 3D Modeling as Hobby for a Mod. I will try a Larry Model soon, cuz i don't like Jason Zayas' Model very much. It's nice but 1st with today's technique there are more polygons and details possibile and i would make a 1:1 model of the Character in LSL7. He's really great with his big eyes and head shape, everything.

Hope i don't bore you. Maybe a little commercial break: Drink more Dr Pepper Cola !!! Yes, it's really great. Forget about Pepsi and Coke, only Dr Pepper has it's own unbelievable refreshing taste *grinning to the camera* (<- yes i love this stuff, good that i live near the Hollandish Border because Dr Pepper isn't produced in Germany)

Ok back to boring stuff: when there is a demo or running version of Gary Fleffner maybe Sierra would take it over. Although this kind of development is slow because the developers just conntact over the net (they live everywhere because there aren't all Skills availible for free next to your place) it's for free. If it gets better there will be more money and meetings and stuff, we do this at our MOD like this, and without any know VIP in our team we were in several Magazine's and TV Shows with our game althoug there is not even a playable BETA done.

I know a programmer who would probably join, he studies and is very good in codin. You can make any team you wish of course, but please make Larry 8. What am i saying this is just a suggestion, i think im dreaming again hehe. (Larry 9 will do it as well ;)

Regards Milho aka Blasius Floch

"i had a dream..." :)

Mr. Lowe,

Just wanted to say that I'm going to miss the Larry series.  That was one of the funniest games I have ever seen!  Do you have any plans on making a part 8 or finding the lost disk for part 4?  ... probably not... anyway, as a fan of your work, just wanted to say Hi ... appreciate the lighter side of tryin' to hook up with a girl, and hope you're having a great time with what you possibly could be doing now.   Do you still work for the game industry?

So without further ado and bothering you further, I'll say goodbye and thanks for the entertainment while it lasted!

-a fan named Shane

hey there.

you very certainly don't know me, but i've been playing your computer games pretty much since they started coming out all those years ago.

i was doing research for an oral presentation i have to do tomorrow morning - which is essentially about the death of the adventure game and was running some searches to see what kind of stuff i got back and your page was pretty literally one of the last i found while doing my search.

i wanted to say two things...the first is that i wholeheartedly concur with a lot of what you said in your article on the subject...and the second is thankyou for the very good times that you [and the pre-1998] set of programmers at sierra gave me as a game player.  i remember that one of my earliest dreams ever [and i still harbor it somewhere, although, not in the same form, certainly] was to come and work at sierra because back when i started playing computer games, they'd basically given me the kind of things i wanted to play - stories.  which i don't find so much outside of rpg's anymore.

i really do appreciate all the jokes and the many, many hours of entertainment your games provided.

good luck.

julian comley

Thanks a lot for the great games, Al, and thanks for the website as well. I have some fond memories of the Larry games and your webpage is like taking a walk down nostalgia lane.

I really think that if Myst never appeared, I'd probably be happily playing Larry 8 right now, with Sam & Max 3 and Monkey Island 5 awaiting its completion. It's quite amazing what damage one huge-selling, horribly flawed adventure game can do.

Hi Al!

I just want to tell you how much i've enjoyed your Larry-games and how sad I am to hear, that there wont be another one. Since I was six, I know its a bit early :-), I've played the game and always been looking forward to the sequel, when one was about to be released. Anyway, you made a game that I think is the best of games ever and Larry will always be remembered by me. Hope you can finish your piece of art someday with Leasure Suit Larry 8.

Best Regards

Thomas

I did a web search asking for stuff about the death of compuer games and your site came up. It did make for interesting reading.  I'm always curious to see what other people think about the whole issue...and to get an opinion from someone in the industry - that I have played games by - gave a whole new perspective on the subject.

I remember, very vividly, specifically buying (at great expense, in South Africa, at the time) an entire computer because i wanted to play space quest one.  I'd seen it running on a friend's machine one december holiday and saved up money and spoke to my parents about it and they were ok with the whole thing - and that's pretty literally how i got started with computer games - space quest one, king's quest three and some shareware.

Speaking from the outside looking in, i started having very bad feelings about the whole thing when i saw phantasmagoria for the first time. That's when i started wondering, seriously, where the whole thing was going.  What made me more worried (particularly about the adventure game as a genre) was The Seventh Guest.  I could, pretty literally, only see bad things coming out of that. The entire game, while graphically beautiful was merely a string of puzzles thrown together.  the point where i think i sudeenly realized that sierra was starting to have problems was when i saw Police Quest Four.

i wasn't as fond of Police Quest as i was of Space Quest particularly but since my sister got involved and liked the whole thing, i got her a copy and we started playing it together...and from about that point on, i knew something was missing.  after that it was pretty much all downhill for me, with regards to Sierra.

I'd already decided that i didn't like first person shooter games [i played the entire first episode of Doom and thought, 'ah.  wait a second.  i just wasted a week or so of my life shooting things...?'] so when Half-Life came along and King's Quest Eight did shortly after that and then Gabriel Knight Three [i'd really liked Gabriel Knight up to about then...] it was pretty much over.

Your point about the 'me too' games is very accurate here - i just found that Sierra were starting to do things 'wrong' and were letting the people go that had made them.  it was frustrating, looking fromt he outside...seeing how it was going...and knowing that it could never go back...like you, i still kind of have hopes for Sierra working things out and getting the old franchises going again, but... my hopes dimmed, after seeing King's Quest Eight/Quest For Glory Five/Gabriel Knight Three.

It is sad.

Hi Mr. Lowe.

I just found your site. I have the Larry ultimate pleasure pack (I was fortunate enough to find it last April), and I saw your site on it. So I thought I’d give it a try.

I love the Larry games! I remember playing those years ago, before I was really allowed to play them (I’m only 25 now.) Now my biggest problem is getting them to play on windows XP!

I don’t know why Sierra ever stopped making the good games. Some, like Larry, they won’t even sell anymore. I have been trying to find the “quest for glory” games forever, and recently I was able to find good old “Colonels Bequest”.  There are not too many adult oriented games anymore, Actually, I don’t remember there ever really being too many. But, Larry was always a great game. Besides the issue of getting Larry to work On Win XP, It’s figuring them out! I’m totally stuck on Larry 5. Are there still guides available? I haven’t checked your whole site yet, so maybe you mention that?

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I hope to hear from you again in the gaming world. Maybe since you can’t do Larry again without Sierra, you can start a new game, perhaps the adventures of some new fella, or woman. Whatever you do, I can’t wait to get it! I think your games are great, and it’s a shame you don’t own the rights to your own creation.

Take care.

Vince

Hi,

I've spent about 6 or 7 years almost totally out of the "games" world wrapped up in "internet" stuff...now that that bubble has burst I find myself with plenty of time on my hands, and decided to seek out a great new adventure game for my new computer, and have some real fun...(last time I had a cutting edge game capable machine was about '93 and I remember playing SQ4, KQ5, LSL5 and like...) To cut a long story short I ended up downloading a bunch of old Sierra adventures, which I was shocked to find languishing on "abandonware" sites, with nothing even remotely like them available commercially.

I hope you don't take offense at my technical theft of what might be some of your property, but unfortunately it has become the only way to obtain any of the classic adventure games like Sierra and Lucasfilm releases. They are now commercially non-existant. I found Sierra's own site totally lacking even an "adventure" category... let alone the slightest mention of any "Quest" beyond Masks of Eternity - which didn't really catch my interest.

This poses an interesting question. What is the status of this "abandoned" software. Movies and books have tended to "keep" and can be constantly re-released, rented on video, DVD, etc. Things like classic James Bond movies, Star Wars movies, Tolkien, even books by Stephen King or Clive Cussler, say, still remain valuable intellectual property decades after their initial release. The first Stephen King novel is still just as satisfying an experience for the new reader as his latest "bestseller"... and just as profitable for the publisher, who still no doubt still stocks it in bookstores. Lucas can seemingly endlessly tweak and re-release Star Wars and make more money on each new "special edition" than the last. Films with Sean Connery & Roger Moore as 007 still regularly crop up on network television, faithfully reaping in royalties as the original actors enter old age.

Yet Leisure Suit Larry languishes in the land of the lost code... virtually disowned by Sierra, his creator "banished", so to speak, without any rights to the creation. He is available only on the "underground", if you can even make him run on your new-fangled PC. As I see it, the only way I could get any reimbursement to you, as the creator of any further Larry games I play, would be to write out a personal check to "Al Lowe" and ask you for somewhere to send it... My mind boggles at this weird situation. Any thoughts?

I have to say that I have always admired you as the creative force behind the Larry games. Only upon discovering this web site did I realize how much you'd contributed to so many of the games I enjoyed over the years. Man, you wore a lot of hats there! More respect to you!

Anyway,

I have always enjoyed the idea of "adventure games". Even before personal computers were common I played paper based RPGs, and loved "Fighting Fantasy" type adventure books. What attracted me to these games was the idea of an original world with a story, plot advancement, characters and objects you could interact with and problems to solve, all integrated into the advancing story with you controlling the actions of the main character.

Sure, there was combat and some mechanics, but they were supposed to "serve" the story-telling. As the roleplaying world progressed, it actually became good gamesmaster practise to hide as much of the "background" dice rolling as possible from the players, fudge dice rolls to keep the plot moving along, and encourage players to use good roleplaying and ingenuity to get out of situations. Some systems even dispensed with the dice altogether and relied on the gamesmasters decided opinion as to what was and wasn't possible.

When the computer gaming industry matured sufficiently that identifiable genres like "adventure" or "RPG" became common, I found it interesting that the supposed computer "RPGs" tended to focus on mechanics, randomness and combat, with character advancement largely increased scores and little real sense of story or plot flow beyond hacking maze after maze of monsters and gathering generic treasure items.

"Adventure" games largely dispensed with the mechanics and combat and focused on creating real individual worlds and locations with atmosphere, plot, characters that integrate with the story, and solving logic/lateral thinking based problems with interaction between objects and characters in the game world.

It was these adventure games attracted me the most when I got access to a computer. The day I first saw and played Space Quest II, the first Sierra graphic adventure I ever saw, I was hooked. I felt I had discovered the "ideal" computer game format, from my point of view. Lush graphics, the best possible for a computer of the day, individually drawn for every scene, wandering around like a vast movie set with things to do and play with in all sorts of ways.

And, ironically, this was what I thought of as a 3D graphic adventure, as you could wander around objects in a seemingly real 3D third person space. It was different from first person 3D, but to my mind better, more immersive, more like a movie than a simulation. This was how games should be. I didn't miss the fighting and combat... it was more fun to get around monsters and things with cunning rather than arbitrary point scores or arcade skills. In fact I found that some games like Monkey Island, where you could hardly ever die, were actually more fun. Also I found that the Quest for Glory series was (minus the corny humor) closer to the spirit of original "tabletop" roleplaying games with a proper setting and campaign purpose, than the supposed "true RPGs" that were being released. Combat was there, but well integrated, not TOO much hassle, and not too reliant on arcade skills.

And when my Dad said I could play Larry 1 if I could answer the quiz - and I got it right, yeah! Great game. I enjoyed all the Leisure Suit Larry games I played immensely. When I read somewhere on this site that they are some of the best adventure games ever, I have to agree. LSL2 in particular stands out in my mind as a classic. So many locations, so many cool problems, something different always happening somewhere different, and such a great ending.

I spent years trying to figure out how to do a game like these, never coming close, as I had nowhere near the resources or knowledge at the time. So I played a lot of Sierra and other adventure and role playing games, programmed my own small text adventures and basic 2D graphic games, finished high school, got a job, got into the internet and multimedia, learnt a lot about graphics and animation and design and music, got a degree in multimedia design, worked in the internet industry until the bubble burst, and now find myself with lots of free time... and in a world where I realize the gaming scene has changed dramatically.

All of Sierras "star" designers gone - no more Al Lowe, Two Guys from Andromeda, Lori Cole... no more "adventure" games, King's Quest a first person action game with plenty of hack-n-slash and platform leaping...

Somewhere along the line the arcade action game has merged with the RPG, which has merged with the simulation into the sort of Quake style game that has taken over the industry. "3D" has become this odd buzzword that means exactly what the industry decides to define it as, but is is "must have" therefore "de-rigeur", no matter what. And currently it is defined as Quake style engines with first person 3D. Total focus seems to be on as fast a frame rate in real time as possible, with as much realistically rendered carnage and blood as possible, with blasting the crap out of everything the only gratification to be obtained. Basic gameplay remains unchaged from the ancient "Gauntlet" game - run around level after level of anonymous maze blasting everything in sight.

In this whole mess somewhere the entire adventure game concept either merged into this 3D first person aracde action game, or disappeared completely... no-one is exactly sure. Problems degenerated from relatively "realistic" interaction with an environment to rubiks cube type "puzzles" and mechanical problems involving pushing the rights buttons or knobs or whatevers the rights way in the right combination. This is really a completely different sort of game altogether, not problem solving.

Even the venerated Kings Quest has turned in this direction. But as I said, I'm not really that attracted to the game. I played both Ultima Underworlds ten years ago, realtime first person 3D is nothing new. I remember when it used to be plain vectors on an 8-bit system... and how revolutionary it was when computers were fast enough to actually fill them in with solid colors in real-time.

But the graphic adventure was always a seperate category that stood apart from, and in my mind above, these other games. I considered third person view with background art to be an artistic directional choice, not just a technical limitation to one day be overcome. The quality of the art in a graphic adventure was always the best of any game. Nothing else has ever captured the same individual atmosphere of each game so well, and allowed such exploitation of artistic flair and style over mere technical limitation.

Even now, if I look at screenshots of Kings Quest 7, the quality and richness of the imagery amazes me, but if I look at KQ8... it looks like something I could knock together in five minutes using Bryce... sure I know I can move around real time and all, but the individual detail is all gone.

Real time rendering simply cannot compete with what can be done given some time, either rendering a really detailed atmospheric picture with correct texturing and scaling and lighting, or getting an artist to draw something good. Even with 3D rendering, the result will always be better if the computer can take some time to do it properly and render really detailed models - good images take hours to render, not 1/24th of a second.

Besides, none of this is reason to dispense with plot and some decent involving puzzles.

Anyway, as I now have the resources and experience needed to actually develop something myself, I would like to give it a go. I've been rendering background graphics and models that I am happy with and would like to start building into a world to explore.

I was inspired by "fan" remakes of Kings Quest 1, redone in VGA with the AGS engine. Someone else is planning to do an SQ7, now that Sierra won't... Now I'm not actually interested in remaking some Sierra property, but I do like the concept, particularly the later icon driven adventures.

I've got engines like AGAST which can create graphic adventures, and I can load my backgrounds, program interfaces and objects and watch in awe as a sprite finally wanders around my own adventure world. (Eh.. if only I had these tools ten years ago!) Of course I have all my other pro graphics software and stuff, as well as a home music studio and recording equipment, plenty of development experience in other stuff, so I figure I can cover all the bases technically. Artistically I'll probably need some assistance with some things, as I'm a decent background and object artist and interface designer, but  poor at people, realistic animals, their movements and animation, etc.

I plan to use high resolution, 24 bit color backgrounds with full anti-aliasing of sprites, good quality sounds and music, plenty of close up shots, and to try and make the interface as intuitive yet flexible as possible. Beyond that, everything is still on the drawing board.

But I noticed that you say on your site that you have some definite ideas on where adventure games should go.("...I've got some great ideas for revitalizing adventure games...") I can't exactly claim to be a publisher with a big budget ready to go, but I was wondering if you'd still be willing to share a few general ideas on where you think the genre should go, and how a modern adventure game should be done. I'm not asking for your secret plot ideas or how to make the next Larry game ;-) Just your ideas on the whole "3D/action/RPG/shoot-em-up/adventure" that we have now, whether you think a traditional adventure, albiet with modern high res (but largely pre-drawn/rendered) graphics and quality sound, can compete today, not necessarily as #1 best-seller award winning mega-game, but as a quality experience that many gamers would enjoy, perhaps even be commercially viable on a small but reasonable scale (i.e. paying production costs, not earning billions) if marketted and distributed properly. Or would you see the adventure evolve in a new, as yet unexplored direction?

I have a nasty suspicion about the gaming industry, which is that the whole thing comes down to expense.

Producing beautiful background screens and rendered animations is time consuming, requires real artists, and is thus expensive. Producing basic shapes rendered with generic textures is easy and faster, needs less "artistic" input as the "computer does the work" ;-), and is thus cheap.

Designing plots and characters with depth and problems to solve is time consuming, and requires real writers and people with ideas, and is thus expensive. Designing generic levels and populating them with generic "monsters" to kill and generic "puzzle" problems is easy, faster, doesn't need talented writers, and is much cheaper.

Was it really lack of interest/demand that killed adventure games, or just cost of production vs shoot-em ups?

Am I walking down a darkened dead end alley, or can you throw me a torch here?

Thanking you now for all the great games, and in advance for any reply I may receive,

Caleb Fuller

Hey Al,

It is really an honour to have a chat with the man who gave me my education with Leisure Suit Larry Series.

I read the article about Larry being dead and that the "Ultimate pleasure Pack" ended up an "Utimate Failure Pack", or so I believe. ( How did it sell by the way?)

I played my first Larry when I was 5 , Leisure suit Larry 3 , 'cos my mom was a technical support person for Unisys South Africa, I was into computers from the time my eyes opened for the first time. Larry was a big hit in South Africa amongst gamers for years and I still have people today asking me where they can find stores that sell copies of the series, and it makes me wanna cry when I say that larry is no more.

I was "educated" by the likes of Larry, and his quest partners from the kings quest, hero's quest, eco quest, space quest, series'.. you name 'em I played 'em. There is not a single adventure I have not played, that is why I am so passionate patti, about all this whole "Larry being iced" saga.

I think sierra are damn ungrateful and should hang their heads in shame for discarding the very characters who made them what they are, Its an outrage!! If it weren't for you and the Williams' they would have been out collecting trash today!!....You all are the legacy of Sierra.

Anyway, they do not have an excuse for what they did, it was plain stoopid.  I mean, Lucasarts released a press article that they are re-introducing the Full Throttle Title because it is the most-beloved classic, I quote Simon Jeffrey - Lucasarts President :  "We can't think of a better brand or character to lead LucasArts' charge into a new era of original game development. Ben so perfectly symbolizes our legacy and yet has just the right mix of attitude and edge to appeal to a new generation of game players."

Why the hell can't Sierra do the same...Their dumb, dumb, dumb.......The just can't market a product those dummies. Have you approached Lucasarts perhaps, do you think they might be interestedin ressurrecting our little buddy? I bet there are millions of supporters out there who would back you. Let me know your thoughts

Have a nice day !!!

Well recently I am playing the all quest series and Lsl games. I admit that I have downloaded them (blush) but I have no other choice because orginal games are not sold here. The thing I have to tell is that they're GREAT! Those new multi cd , games with fx and so is just Nothing compared to them. (By the way I think I had a few grammer mistakes if so sorry) I would like to see LSL8 and buy it if the orginal game comes here also. Thanks for creating a real new type of pc game Al

I must disagree with the feeling that adventure games are dead. Many RPG's are in essence adventure games, for example: Baldur's Gate. RPG's, like traditional adv. games, have pre-written stories, and players simply play the role of the "adventurer"!

Larry 1 was the first game I ever saw and played. It was great and I still return to the series to play an episode. You have made an everlasting footprint as a pioneer and artist in this today overflooded market, and would have been a lot less fun without you! For me there´s just "too much Disney". Please read my other letter to you. We have to make sure the world gets Larry 8! .....and 9 and 10 and 11 .. and..... I take off my hat for my computer idol! Best Regards Carl

WHY are they canceling Leisure Suit Larry 8?? What is wrong with them? Larry is the only video game I've ever played. I don't understand, how could you guys do this to me? It was my life, and you guys have just ruined it. I just figured out they were making an 8th after playing Casino today, and I just figured out they were NOT making one the same day. Hey Al, I grew up with Sierra games... I learned how to read by watching my older brother play the old space quests, king's quests, police quests, and yes even leisure suit larrys. Every now and then I meet people at college who also grew up with these games. It is really sad what has happened to sierra. I've kept all the old game boxes and disks (even though I can't play the 5 1/4 " disks anymore! :-) ) and every now and then I'll play an old game and the responses that some of the commands give you still make me laugh. Those games had an awful lot of personality. Even my mom played them; I remember when I was maybe 5 or 6 trying to figure out rumpelstiltskin's name in KQ1 with my mom. Oh well, thanks for all the memories man! :-)

I think it's odd that Disco is back and Larry isn't. We now hear "Boogie oogie oogie" and countless Bee Gees' songs we thought we threw out with our eight track player, on the radio as "JAMMIN OLDIES!" Larry would have loved it. God help us if we live in a time when Larry is actually Cool. Al, we have a very active Jazz scene, would like to hear you play. Get a gig in Pittsburgh, Hey, Billy Strayhorn, Amad Jamal, Earl Hines, Not too shabby a company for the burgh. Larry Uber Allus...

I've been a Sierra Fan for a long time, but lately, Sierra just sucks. It was much better with all of the good programers that did stuff, like Jim Wallas (sp??) Al Lowe(d??), Ken Williams, Ect... What The F#@* Happened? LSL games are good (although I'm not suppose to play them, I still do) I must say, I did subscribe to INN, I liked it, expecialy when my parent's credit card was lost *I didn't do it!*:) anyway I still played them. Please, make a new type of LSL game, call it Disco Time Jerry or something!?!?!?

A car, or Larry 8! :-) No, I really hope that you will one day be able to release Larry 8. At the moment I am downloading the movie... And there are two things I want to ask you. First of all, has your daughter the same humour you have, and... how old is she? ;-) And the second thing is: Is "Good Bye" really that what you want to tell your "fans"? Yes, The leisure suit larry series. Started playing those when I was 9. Sure, I was underaged but it was either that or Space commando's. Not knowing what LSL was about I discovered stranged new words such as 'prophylactic', 'virgin' and 'ribbed'. And that kind of education is important to a kid. uh, thanks AL, I guess. With such brilliant work as FREDDY and LARRY to your credit, I'm sure your creativeness will continue to carry you through what lies ahead. Good luck!

I REALLY like to play Larry 8! I played Larry 1 when I was 5-6 years old, and even now (15) I'm still a fan! I REALLY hope Lust in Space Comming Soon...... But Sierra doesn't maybe know how many fans Larry haves! Well I always loved all the Sierra adventures, especialyLarry! (my first game)

Great site Al! I was really looking foward to Leisure Suit Larry 8 or a Freddy Pharkas 2. Larry 7 was my last Sierra game that I ever bought and I still haven't gotten all the points! I'd also love to comment on "For your thieghs only" song you made. It's one of my favorites! Just out of curiosity though what happened to Patti after Larry 5? Did she just leave or what. Keep up the good work.

Dear Mr. Lowe, There is nothing much to say. For me, Larry is the best adventure ever (100% lifestyle), and it was the first game I've played when I was in school. Our teacher told us to write pascal programs but we prefered playing Leisure Suit Larry in the land of the Lounge Lizards (do you like Lurie's band too?). Thanks Al for your funny games - they will resist time. Best, thomas

It angers me that those bloody bastards at Sierra fired you!!! Leisure Suit Larry is the greatest computer adventure game series EVER! The sad thing is that the series was getting better and better as it progressed. Lsl 7 must be my favorite game of all time! And I have been faithfully awaiting the day that "Larry Explores Uranus" came out. Until, I read about black monday. Anyway, you're the greatest, Al. I hope that those simpletons at Sierra changes their mind and comes back crawling on their knees toward you. p.s. your humor section is absolutely hilarious. I was guffawing with laughter every second.

I will become a tally when I say this, but sorry about the Sierra thing.... and I think this will dent forever. LSL had such a big impact on the world, but I am glad the person behind it is still letting out his creativity in his original ways. =) Oh yeah, I have one quick question =) Me being a big Astrology nut, I was wondering what LSL's astrology chart might be? =) Probably a Cancer *lol* Well I will stop writing so much Im sorry, but again can't wait for your book. Have fun and take care! -Sarah

Yes, your games have got as far as us. You have no idea how disappointed I was when I heard the bad news. However I have an idea. How much do you think it will take to buy the rights for LSL from Havas? If we all chip in, we could possibly raise the amount and AL is free to make more LSL games! Alright, perhaps a bit pie in the sky, but hey, why not give it a try? In addition, I have got LSL 1-6, but 7 never made it to the shelves over here. Can ANYONE tell me where to get one at all? Or has anyone (including you, Al) got a copy I can borrow/have/buy - whatever?

I love the Leisure Suit Larry page. I want to thank you for creating such a excellent series that became a big part of my life. I never laugh. Not at anything other people think is funny. You made me laugh. That is something a normal person cannot do. You are an extrodinary author. Most other authors never could make me laugh. Except Scott Murphy, Josh Mandel, and last but not least, Mark Crowe. You did nothing to deserve your series going down the drain. It should be going eternal.

I just want to say thank you! for your Larry games(and to all the other people who helped you in the making). I remember when i was staying in my cousins house one summer and played Larry1 on an Atari, i was just a kid then and we had trouble answering all the "big folks answers" and non of us could read english very good(nowadays i can at least read it :-) ). Then when we at last answered enough questions to play the game, i was amazed by the graphic and atmosphere of the game. We kept playing many long hours until there father told us to stop playing and go outside and play football in the nice weather - we did go outside for a short while but went inside again and started answering "all big folk" questions… Keep up the good work Al whatever you do! Looking forward to the book!! Man I started playing Larry with the original LSL1 back when I was way too young (about 11 I think) and I've follwed him and sierra ever since. Now I jsut look forward to all your future endevours. Know you have a loyal follower in me.

You know, Al, I am so happy that you replied to me, even if you had no information for me. You're a very nice person, and it is apparent to me that you are just a regular guy who doesn't feel above anyone, how rare.

I remember buying a book on DOS just to create a batch file so I could run LSL3 on my 8088, and I would play it and play it until Patty and Larry were in the scene in bed, save it there, and replay it. (Well, my son had to help me with the feral pig, anyway!)...He was ten, then.

I have joined Your daily joke goodie, I may be able to offer one or two, I am trying hard to work for MAD mag, or something like that.

I had an apple II plus, and I had all of Your games, until my home burnt down, I lost everything, I'll have to leave something on your message boards, too.

I wish you continued sucess and happiness, Sierra's the best!

Sincerely,

Christine

Hello,

I'm sure you have a lot of fans, and that in every message u receive they say i'm your biggest fan... But I'm also sure that I am your biggest french fan lol ! So, as my english is not so good, i'll make it short... Sorry to bother u about that, but I read somewhere that codemasters have bought all the stuff u make for lsl, is that true ? And if it is, will there be lsl 8 ???

I hope that instead of playing again and again and again and again (etc...) to lsl7 (which is great, wonderful, marvellous, and funny !!!) i will soon play to lsl8...

Please answer yes,

HINDY

Looking back over the letters I wrote to you and to Sierra after Black Monday, I guess I got a little fanatical after Larry's premature demise. Recently I went back and played LSL 7 for the first time in quite a while, and I still really miss the little loser. I was glad to hear there was at least a passing interest in reviving Larry recently at Sierra, but I have to say I am as pessimistic as you are. In the meantime, none of my grandiose plans for possible other avenues to resurrect Larry bore fruit. Some of that was my fault(I have a tendency to get excited and dream a lot bigger than I can deliver on my humble means), but some lies with the folks at Sierra, who simply refused to answer any of my inquiries about securing the rights for LSL in any form. Guess it didn't hurt that I came on so strong. Anyway, keep the faith and keep letting us fans know what we can do to help get Larry back in polyester. Thanks!

Jeff Krouskop

Well, I guess i have to admit it, i played leisure suit larry since i was 4 years old. Ha ha my friends dad had the lounge lizards game in his compter room and wed spend all night attemptingto pass the questions, when we did, we'd either get runover by the cab on the road or get beat up by the thug in the alley. ten years have passed since those glory days. I'm now 14. I remembered leisure suit larry when i saw the pleasure pack. I tried to let my mom get me it but nooo im not old enough. haha i know what you're thinking, "Oh my god ive corrupted a child" but larry is still my favorite hero. Ive downloaded the first larry adventure from some bosnian site and being the more mature me, ive beaten it. I cant really find the second one, but ill cut to the chase, i think you should make your own software company. That way, you could create the 8th larry on your own. It would be great! every body loves leisure suit larry. people would donate to your cause! but enough about that, you should post full game downloads on your site, i love larry and dont care if its a mature game, im a prodigy! i understand it. haha alright thanks for reading this and email me back please. I love lsl and ope it to live for ever!

Mitch

Hello Mr Lowe.

Just wanted to tell you that I grew up on games that you designed and or helped develop. I loved them. Spent countless hours beating Black Cauldron, LS Larry etc..etc.. Some real fond memories sitting in front of an Amiga 2000 or a PC XT with my friends. Great set of games! Best Regards,

Josh H.

Hi Al

i emailed you probably about 2 years ago (dont expect u to remember lol) im Nick, in london UK........ anyway...

i went back on your site the other day because i misssed Larry :)))) and re-read the whole site because i love it lol, i found interesting the "update" on the larry situation.. so alram bells started ringing!!!! If you manage to start on a new Larry game then i think an appropriate title would be Leasure Suit Larry 4 (yes 4) after all who said "Who says sequels must always be "in order?" lol, plus now it would be easier to write a beggining, there are many options as im sure you have thought of, inc time travel of some sort i.e the game starts as larry 8 but as u play larry goes somehow back in time to larry 4 and maybe as you finish the game he comes back to this day and age and you finish in larry 8!!!! what do u think? i really think 4 needs to be made before 8 :)) 4 is the key to all larry fans!!! everyone i know who played larry asks but i want to play larry 4.... lol inc me and i know you have heard soo soo soo much about larry and this is just another email amongst the many but you are the man!!. i actually have not really played many pc games since i finished larry 7, i play a game called SWAT or something like that was quite good but so short, finished it in 3 days, since then ive lost faith, we need a new Mr laffer :), i will even write letters to all the publishing companies to see if they would be interested in a larry game. does sierra still own the rights?

If there is anything i can do to help i would me most happy too... i dont mind doing the running around lol writing leters. emails, faxs what ever it takes....hope something will happen soon (alot of people are on broadband now).

I will leave you with my thoughts. Hope to hear from you soon. Regards,

Nick Piacun

hey,

I just when out and bought leisure suit larry 6 "shape up or slip out" in a game pack and it is THE BEST(!!!!!) adventure game ever, i am sad that their will be no lsl8, but oh well, i just had to say what a great and funny game this is

and if you have the spare time please mail me back and i would be proud to have an email in my inbox from you and would keep it forever (not meaning to sound a bit 8-year old!)

Dear Al-

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thanks... if it hadn't been for you and some of the other golden age game designers at Sierra, I wouldn't have had the courage or the impetus to consider a career in entertainment. That may sound silly, but as an interactive performer and a fantasy author you guys were (and still are) my idols. I still think of the genius of the LSL games -- Larry's dialogue and physicality, the humor, the perfect presentation that kept it sexually charged but not pornographic.

So Sierra went corporate and ditched you -- it's no surprise that their new games are awful. It's just a trend; next thing you know they'll be taken down by the SEC for creative accounting.

Thanks for your contribution to the world of interactive entertainment, and I hope you'll give yourself a chance to do more work in that field because you're far too young to retire.

So in the tradition of Groucho Marx...

Hoping this letter finds you,

I beg to remain,

As of June 30,

Cordially,

Yours,

Regards,

(I hope that covers everything)

-Jem Matzan

Hi Al!

First of all, I'm another big fan of yours! I'm 20 years old, from Tel-Aviv, Israel, and your games had a significant effect on my life. I literally grew up on Larry! The first CD I ever purchased was Freddy Pharkas.

Well, I must admit, all the Sierra quests had a great impact on my life. Space Quest, Police Quest, King's Quest and of course Leisure Suit Larry are all marvelous creations by genius minds... I am terribly disappointed to see Sierra now, not to mention the cancellation of the Babylon 5 simulator a couple of years ago. But this belongs to a totally different story...

Anyway, I didn't imagine I will ever have a chance to really contact you! But nevertheless I have accidently read about your website on an Israeli on-line newspaper. What a cool website! I have read most of it, downloaded some Larry flics and all in all really enjoyed it! I'm so happy to see that you still make people laugh!

Since I was young, I have tried to make games myself. Today I am finishing my second year at Computer Engineering in the Technion in Israel. I have made several games over the years since I started highschool, and was wondering if you would like to see them?

You can find them all in http://Studio-Blum.com/Games/ . Cult, Cult II and Nuclear Deterrence are my attempts to contribute to the adventure game genre, for all those starving adventure players out there. Cult and Cult II are given for free, and Nuclear Deterrence is a Shareware.

It would be a great honor for me to know that you have seen or played my games... I can't describe how thrilled I am from even thinking about this... Your comments, for good or worse, will be more than welcome. Even though almost 1 million people from around the world have already downloaded my games from the internet, and many CDs were published with my games on them in magazines all around the world, I cannot think of a greater honor than this one.

So, again, thank you for all the good time made to so many people around the world, including myself,

Your fan,

Lee Blum

i only today learned that there will be no LSL8. i am extremely dissapointed by this. at about 4 am today i finally finished LSL7 in the midst of a nasty bout of insomnia. that game was awesome! thanks for putting out such fun games. with the exception of your larry series and lucas films' monkey island series, i do not bother with computer games. gaming has never been a hobby of mine at all, however your games are so damn funny i cant resist!

Its truly sad that seirra has abandoned this landmark series in favor of what i see as being games of an irritating faddish/trend nature sure to burn out like the worst of pop music. It is upsetting to see this type of disregard ravaging all industries presently, be it music, video games or anything. it seems to me that everyone is scrapping long standing material with loyal followings, material that will retain its following for years and decades to come, replacing it with one hit wonders and material with short money raking life spans. ok, enough of my bitching! i'll go read some more jokes!

I wish you the best of luck with whatever your current occupation may be and hope to someday seen your name gracing the credits of another great game.

best regards,

jeremy

Dude!

I just wanted to drop you a line and say THANKS for all the awesome things you've made. I remember, back when LSL1 came out. I was 6 years old and we had a 286 (top of the line!). I used to watch my mom play the game (from behind the counter, heh).

I remember as I got older and they got a brand new shiny 386, I was allowed to actually use the old computer, and I used to sneak play LSL. All those damn Anti-Kid question got on my nerves, heh, but because of that, i was motivated to pull out my history book and actually learn the answers :P

I learned how to spell, and read and write because of Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. . . those games was what got me into computers totally.

I'm 19 now, and am a full time college student programmer who intends on getting hired at a gaming company to be just like you :)

Its kinda funny . . . I Love programming, and I occasionally make games for my girlfriend just for the hell of it. I hope that someday, I'll be as good as you guys were.

Neways, Thanks for reading my letter. . . this is probably the 15000th one you've ready that says the same thing, heh. You Complete Lifelong Fan and Whorshiper,

-Brian

P.S. I hate the fact that you are retired. . . Now that you left sierra, the games are just not the same. I had all the Sierra On-Line adventure series' LSL, SQ, and KQ. . . and I still find myself playing those rather than the flashy new stuff that just came out. :)

WHY WHY WHY>.. LEISURE SUIT LARRY IS THE COOLEST GAME A TEEN COULD EVER PLAY>> DON'T KILL HIM>>>. !Q! lOL please for teenagers sake... don't !!!!! MAKE LSL 8!!! PLEASE AND MORE make 8! PLEASE well bye

Us

Al Lowe,

I congratulate you on a job well done on the Leisure Suit Larry series and Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist. Your games proved to be original and brought a new face to the computer entertainment industry. I have been a Sierra fan ever since my dad first bought Police Quest 1 for our Compaq DeskPro 386, and I continue to purchase Sierra games. Although many people would think FPFP was my first game because I am only 18, I was able to sneak in a few hours of Leisure Suit Larry 1 and 5, when my brother was going to college. Don't tell my parents! ;)

Anyways, I hope progress with Leisure Suit Larry 8 goes well, as I would love to see the continuation of one of Sierra's greatest pieces of work. And if Sierra decides to drop Leisure Suit Larry, I will be first in line to buy your First Person Shooter, 'Kill Those Bastards at Sierra!'

Thanks for all you have done,

Jarred

Hanford, CA

I literally own hundreds of games and recently aquired a copy of your Leisure Suit Larry Love for Sail. Let's just say when friends act "curious" about which games I play and own, you can bet I proudly introduce them to my "friend" Larry !!! Bravo Bravo Bravo !!! YOU HAVE TO GIVE US MORE !!!!

A TRUE FAN,

YOU ARE A LEGEND!!!

I have been reading your site between helping customers. Very funny stuff!

You are important Al! You are the creator of Larry! If it wasn't for Larry I would of been completely bored in high school. I went to a Vocational school for my 11th and 12th grade years for computer programming. The teacher for my 11th grade year gave all the assignments for the year at one time. She beleived that she should not hold students back who can work faster then the rest of the class. Well, I was one of the fast ones. I completed the work for the year by midterms. So the 2nd half of the year I played video games. Larry being one of them! And I got a A+ in the class. But that was a LONG time ago in the days of the 286 processor.

I did buy the Larry pack so I could have the entire collection.

In my days of computer programming, I wanted to be YOU! I wanted to create a game that could be fun and Funny. But, I could not afford to continue learning how to program, and the area I was in at the time only had need for factory workers.

I moved away from that town. I now am back in school, this time for computer hardware and networking.

Are you working on any new projects, as in video games?

You are the main inspiration i'm going into game development, thanks Al. I owe it all to you.

Jeff

I have been a big Larry fan for many years and have loved playing on my PC, but as of late I am more inclined to buy PS2 games and use that as my playground so to speak. I recently picked up "Escape from Monkey Island" which was also originally a PC game. If the creators at Lucas Arts can bring that game to the PS2 console their should be someone that believes in your magic enough to convert Larry the Lord of PC games to Larry the PS2 Player of all Players. I will continue to hope and wait for another addition of a true cult classic. Best wishes to you and make it happen!! If anybody can you can.

Your fan,

Billy Carver

Hi Al..... Was wondering if you are ever going to put out any more Leisure Suit Larry "games" again... I would like to see the first three CD's re-worked so they run on Windows 98 systems... Then I could have the whole set and be able to play all disks on one machine...

Just a thought Al,, Lots of fun to play....... Lets see some new stuff from you

Jim Zajicek

Hi Al,

I'd just read from your site, that the leisure suit larry series has been (more or less) discontinued.

I'd like to say that sierra or whoever is running the company these days must have been born in a quarry, being that they have rocks in their head.

The Larry Laffer character has been one of the funniest testimonies in computer gaming history - I've played all the games except no.6 (which i'm still trying to get to work from the pleasure pack) and was totally looking forward to playing LSL8.

The Leisure Suit Larry Games put sierra on the map, to which i have been eternally grateful for over the years after seeing some many brilliant games come from Sierra.

These days i can't even think of any games that i want to play by Sierra other than older ones because, since the big sucesses of Half Life, most games seem to be more action-based rather than character/puzzle/storyline-based.

So i'd like to thank you for adding to the computer games culture for so long and creating so many brilliantly funny games which have helped make so many lives a little less boring.

All the best,

Secret Squirel Z

aka Rob

p.s - is the won net site still supporting LS Casino? i'm having trouble getting any response from the site when i've gone online.

Cheers

Dear Al,

I'll never lose faith in you, no matter where you go in the programming world or what Sierra does, you made the giant what it is today. From the day of the release of Leisure Suit Larry: Land of the Lounge Lizards all the way up to the rumors of Larry 8, I have followed your Legacy. It seems that the only person around me that thinks my type of jokes are funny are the kind of themes presented inside your games. I always have those same types of ideas rolling inside my polyester head! lol Thanks for everything! I'll be watching for you! Thanks!

your loyal fan,

Ryan Kent

Hey AL!

I just wanted to let you know ( probably hear it all the time, but hey. your allowed a large ego) , that because of your games My younger brother and i are on our way to game dev. college in the spring, and hope to bring tons of enjoyment to upcomming game players, like you have brought to me and my brother. Actually. I think he emailed you and you hit on him. How can you mistake a Jeff for a female? (pssst. he is kinda girly, so all is forgiven ). But anyway, Thank you!... and I am spent!

PS. Good Luck on the Book!

James Farrand

Al!

I want to thank you for every Larry game you've produced. Larry games were always unique in comparison to other games. That's why I think it is regrettable that Sierra has frozen the project! My opinion is that in the present game market there is no game that can even come close to something like Larry.

I cannot understand that people are only interested in first-person shooters and empty-headed shit like that! On your website you mention that the R&D on a computer game such as Larry costs 2 to 3 million dollars. I own a IT company myself. And If I had 2-3 Million dollars to waste, and you owned the copyrights on Larry. Maybe we could have worked out a deal. Has there already been done some thorough (global) market research? To see how much potential Larry still has? Because even in the Ancient Europe everybody knows Larry! And ask me when I talk about it! Why there isn't coming another Larry game? I just wanted to share this with you! And it's great you've set up a portal to communicate.

Kind Regards

Jasper

Hi Al,

I'm a big fan, had written you a long time ago .. how your LSL s/w changed my life (eg I got fired for having LSL 1 on my pc at work from my first job at age 21, then got a job paying a lot more, became kinda rich n famous and now I'm doing well in Hawaii :) ... and you had told me about your experience with a dotcom etc..

Quick question - I Know you'd make a fortune if you could somehow develop a LSL-type game for the new game consoles, like playstation 2 .. any chance that you could do that? eg either renegotiate to be able to continue LSL license/development via PS2 w/sierra/ea or whoever, or, creating a new character that's close (if there's a licensing issue etc), promoting it from you, I'm thinking .... "From Al Lowe, the creator of Leisure Suit Larry - comes ... " for the PS2 ... ca-chingo. yeah baby!

Just a thought - you're a creative software genius, I love your games and still happily play them to this day.. it would be great, and I know you have a huge fan base/market for it (there's no risque games for any of the consoles, you'd make a killing :) ..

Hey also, any way I can see that interview of you? the videoplayer crashes my IE 5.5 browser .. ..

Best wishes, from Hawaii

Ken Calhoun

I really miss seeing new installments of LSL. Made an impression on me... played the first game LSL1 when I was 21, helped me become a playboy type, had a bunch o great women (working on wife #3 and had like 22 girlfriends, all fun :), now 38 and married 5 years - sigh looks like I'm settling down. it's all good. Glad I don't haveta figure out the "tie rope to rail" puzzle + break window w/hammer to get the pills. I still remember that one. 17 years later. You da man.

Hi

I'm really huge fan of your works and I'm really sorry that Sierra decided to change their image and fire all of you old designers :<. I just wanted to ask that have you noticed the great scene that Adventure Game scene that has been inspired because of huge work that Sierra and LucasArts did in the beginning of the 90's?

At http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ they have invented new windows based program which you can do good old adventure games that are similar that you did in early 90's. That program works incredibly well and group called Tierra Games which you can find at http://www.tierraentertainment.com/ has created new VGA-remake of King's Quest I. If I wouldn't know better, I would say that it would be made by Sierra because graphics and musics are so grand and very well done that I guess even that Sierra would have done them in same fashion. Tierra Games has also started to make VGA-remakes of King's Quest II and Quest for Glory II. There is also page called The Ultimate AGI & SCI Web Site at http://www.classicgaming.com/agisci/ where Brian Provinciano has created program that is called SCI Studio. With that program you can create Sierra games that used SCI0 which you used at Leisure Suit Larry 2 & 3. SCI Studio is also very interesting program because it can even open old Sierra games and change them!

I just think that whole thing is rather fascinating and I would be quite interested to hear that what person like you think about this phenomenon. Are you flattered by it? Or are you just confused as you think that someone is really playing your games still and are creating new programs and utils to create similar games. Or don't you care at all?

Yours sincerely,

Teppo Holmqvist

P.S I'm sorry about my poor english. ^_^

Thanks for the moments of Joy Larry has given me and my wife.

I'm only 25, but Sierra guided me through my first few years of pc gaming. But to me Larry was its flagship. I know this means little to nothing to you since 1999, but I just wanted to say thanks to you and your team for Larry.

My wife hates computer games, HATES. But there was something about Larry that help me and my wife bond behind this old Monitor. Love for Sail was hands down, the most fun i've ever had in an adventure game. For hours we would just click and laugh.

Good God, i'm starting to get emotional over here. I recall the first time we found the easter egg and Larry stared at a nude Drew Baringmore and laughed from a flashback of when we were dating. "I'm feeling ya Larry." I don't mean to bore you, just wanted to say "thanks for the memories."

With Sincere Admiration

Will Hill

Terve!

I just moved and while I was digging out my boxes I found the boxes of SQCollection, RWAnthology and PQCollection. I thought that I have so much spare time that maybe I’ll try out some of them again...Well, this is what happened:

I played through SQ1-3 and so much 6 that I can before my computer stops...For some reason SCI1-games don’t work in it...then PQ1-4, KQ1-3+7 and some other nice ones, including LSL1,2&7... I’m still trying to remember to just order it from Sierra and I have to, cause they are just too good. Because of all this gaming I got a nice headache but it also got me interested to continue AGI-game that me and my friend are making and I hope that we have it ready before Christmas.

I still think that it is very sad that we will never see LSL8, SQ7 or KQ9...Many of the older games that you have also been making are classics.I never get tired to start them all over again. I also wanted to ask how could I get those Freddie Pharkas-games?I have never played them before and I’m very interested. Thank you for those lovely moments you have created to all of us.

Kuulemisiin!

-Aleksi

Dear Mr. Lowe,

I know you get TONS of e-mail, mostly asking when will Larry 8 (or maybe 4, after you find that hidden backup dir. on your pc because your dog ate the floppies) be done. I have another question, since Sierra stopped producing copies of the Pleasure Pack and amazon.com doesnt have them in stock anymore, how do we go about getting one of the good old Larry games ?? I.e. can we start to legally copy the game and spread it as abandon ware ?? Or maybe you as “the daddy of the game” can get the rights back from them so you can sell them ?

Can you please, when you have the time, shed some light on this ? Thank you.

Paul Müller

P.S. Happy Birthday. I know, too late, but it's the thought that counts ;-)

So I heard you programed this King’s Quest 3..great game, but I saw the credits for the closing theme as “Originally written by Margaret Lowe”. Any relation? Your wife perhaps?

Also...I pulled up a C-64 emulator and played some of my old games (they have since died..with myself not knowing as a kid that the sun is not good for them) and I came across this old donald duck game that my mother got for me in an attempt to settle me down and trick me into learning. Well...lo and behold there is your name! must have been one of your first games. Good stuff.

Also, I would like to tell you that your first two Leisure Suit Larry games (Well, and KQ3) were used by myself in reabilitating my hands after a bad car accident that shattered both my hands (I should know better than driving a honda in the SUV world here in California). Anyway...I relearned to type using those programs. I really believe they helped my muscles and tendons heal properly so I could use them again.

Well...then when I was better I could play the rest of your games with just the mouse. I even believe that so much I have my 17 year old kid playing larry 1 so he can learn to type faster. I find that the pursuit of “pixated woman” can be quite the motivator.

Funny how I used to play this game when I was a kid, thinking it was so “adult”. Anyway, I don’t want to keep you any longer then I already have.

Thanks for all the memories...and the help in healing myself. I got the best of both worlds now, as they say humor is the best medicine. I look forward to opening my mail every day to find one of your jokes.

You are a great man Al Lowe. God bless you.

Hi.

I'm a fan of yours from NZ. After buying and completing Leisure Suit Larry 3 a couple years ago, I have gone out a brought and completed the collection, got hooked on Space Quest and have had a go at King's Quest.

But after being unable to find a copy of LSL7 or Freddy Pharkas, I have been forced to find and download demos off the internet.

Sorry to hear they scraped LSL8 but I hope that Sierra finally see the light of day and carry on making the games they are so renown for.

Also have you seen the Space Quest 7 game website at www.sq7.org ? It looks pretty good!

Thanks

Christopher Morton

Leisure Suit Larry was not a game my mother would buy me. I had to sneak off and buy it with my own money and put stickers over the disks...just in case. Maybe that’s what made Larry so fun at first as it was taboo.

I really didn’t understand a lot of the humor at the time, but did to a degree (My favorite thing to do at the time was that I used to steal the condoms over and over again and show my friends what happened next...good stuff).

Now that I am older and playing them again I am rolling with laughter. I found Larry 3 to be one of the funniest. I think the ending was one of my all time favorites. It took me forever to figure out the jungle maze. I guess I should have read the newspaper more closely.

One of my favorite things to do while killing time at work is scouring the Internet for Easter eggs and funny things to try out. I uploaded a copy of the original LSL on my HPC, so I can take Larry with me everywhere I go now. I can’t tell you how many times I have beat that game...fun every time.

Here’s a great story. I was flying home about five months ago from France and I busted out my HPC and was starting a new game when the man sitting across from me recognized the Larry music and came over to watch. I let him play and he fell in love all over again. It is a small world indeed.

Next month I am going to be best man at his wedding. I’m thinking of throwing a Larry themed bachelor party.

The gaming future of Larry may be bleak, but he is still bringing people together. I must thank you for that, and for writing me back. I hardly expected a reply from you, as I am sure you get bombarded with hundreds of emails a day.

I’ve taken the liberty of printing out your email and combining with a picture of Larry from the box of Love for Sail and one of you from your website. I will get a frame and put it up on my wall in my pool room with all my other famous people’s autographs and pictures.

In retrospect you have made my day many times...but today you have done it twice. Thanks again for everything. Happy Anniversary and God Bless.

Hi Al,

First of all, I am a young Spanish business guy working for an american multinational in Germany (the world is weird, isn´t it?). And I suppose that as you, I feel completely disappointed with the computer world.

Even if I am young (24), I started playing on my brother´s Commodore VIC-20 and programming on a Commodore 64, designing my first moving sprites and simple games. Computing was fun. In 1992 we bought our first PC and even if I wasn´t very happy with it (what is a driver ? how do I program this thing ?) I got used to it and started programming again (Quick-Basic, Pascal).

My brother got a copy (pirated, no Sierra distribution in Spain at that time) of LSL3 and I enjoyed the story improving my English skills and knowing that I was playing a game of a guy called Al Lowe, and some time later I played a game called Monkey Island made by a guy called Ron Gilbert, and so on, and so on.

At the end of high school and with two friends (one is actually finishing computing sciences and the other is a graphic designer,) we started creating a nice graphic adventure for DOS. DOS was dying and Windows 95 came out, actually our nice game was starting to look quite bad (old fashioned, old DOS environment, problems with Sound-Blaster under Windows, etc.) and I got so pissed off after all the work I put in it that when I finished high school I studied international business.

I also didn´t like the way the computer world was going. At that time, playing a graphic adventure or game was for me like reading a book or watching a movie, it was personal, it was allowed to make dirty jokes and the story was in some way directly related to the author. At that time, companies like Sierra, Lucasfilm, Delphine, etc. were not only driven by money-making but by guys that wanted to express themselves (Ron Gilbert wrote the story for Monkey Island himself and you LSL).

Nowadays, 99% of the games coming out are pure shit, there is no more story-telling anymore, games are anonymous and designed for simple kids with nothing in their brains. I only tell you that I recently bought a Playstation 2 just for playing 3D Games (my favourite genre) and I have no Internet at home. I suppose that Sierra killed you and Larry because of a generational change, the old and good generation grewed up and the new one was not interested in this complicated and strange stories, they wanted horrible aliens designed by weird Japanese people, a genre which I do not and never will understand. And I suppose Sierra also discovered shareholders and that distribtion is better and cheaper than creating.

I am curious to see the trailer of the 3D Larry, but actually this is a thing I miss from games nowadays, with this enormous 3D capacity and fast machines, why the f*** don´t programmers create a nice peaceful cartoonish graphic adventure in 3D, telling a story at the same level as for example a Stephen King book ? Just imagine playing a 3D game where you walk on a 3D sandy beach listening to the sea, etc. etc. and not with a rifle and shooting at some enemies.

Al, why don´t you take some time and start programming again ????? Lots of people would be happy to play again a story made by you.

Regards,

Miguel

Hello,

I want to know (Scuse my english, I'm french :p) Hum....

I want to know if LSL8 will exist in USA et when (if it's posible, I would like a date)

Thank you,

Julien

I have been a fan of Larry since I was fresh out of high school, my husband got me hooked on him. I bought Love For Sale about a year ago at Best Buy, then shortly after that ran across the Ultimate Pack and bought it.

My computer crashed not too long ago and I start having to reload everthing, but to my disappointment Love for Sale would not load again. Can you help me get my Larry back???

Thank You,

Samantha Born

Hey Al,

I was on the Sierra site and sent them an email asking if there was gonna be another Larry game, then came here to learn the sad truth that there probably won’t be another one! Too bad really, I loved playing the Larry games. Sierra had a good thing going in the 90’s with funny, quirky adventure games. Too bad they left them to die...

When I was in college I was gonna start a web petition for a movie version of Larry, but that never really got off the drawing board and probably wouldn’t fly nowadays, what with Sierra pretty much kicking Larry to the curb. Just image hearing the Larry theme song playing from all directions in a darkened room, and on screen this balding middle aged guys walks out and talks in a squeaky voice “Hi, I’m Larry!”. That would be movie magic for sure.

Anyway, keep the dream alive, maybe Larry will grace our computer screens again someday! Thanks for the many hours I spent laughing while playing the Larry games. I’m still available if you need details on the Larry movie by the way ;)

Hey, uhm, I can’t believe I’m writing an e-mail to Al Lowe! I’m writing an e-mail to Al Lowe!!! I watched you on the ScreenSavers, and you were great!

First off, I’ve got to say that you’re my hero. I practically grew up with Larry, Fawn, Eve, and Passionate Patti (and her persuit for the pulsating pectorals). I’ll never forget the nights I spent trying to cross the pirhana stream in LSL2, or the days I spent trying to get Patti safely through the river log ride. Or trying to get the wine back to the apartment safely in LSL1.

I’ve been a Larry Laffer fan ever since I got my first computer in 1986 or 87. My first Sierra game was Leisure Suit Larry 1, which my dad introduced to me on his Sharp monochrome laptop. He needed help, as he was stuck in the game. He was at the start of Larry 1, at the front door of “Lefty’s”. He had no idea how to enter the bar. He tried typing “Use my hand to open the door infront of me.”, and other countless variations, until I suggested he simply type “Open door”. Never having played an adventure game before, he rebuffed me, saying my suggestion was too simple for a computer to understand. He typed the phrase in, and lo-behold, the pixelated door of a virtual bar swung open. And that’s all he let me play of Larry 1, he deemed the rest of it to be ‘too old’ for me.

That didn’t stop me from playing however, I secretly using his laptop to play and finish Larry 1 before he did! He didn’t know this until I told him in front of friends and family that “You need to buy a lubber Dad!” (I meant he needed Larry to buy a lubber to finish the game!) laughs

He bought me LSL2 the day it was released in Australia. He let me play that game without supervision, because he played the first 10 minutes of it thought it was completely ‘clean’ unlike the first. What a mistake!

My years as a Larry fan progessed.

C:\> CD LSL

C:\LSL> LARRY.BAT

slowly turned into

C:\> CD SIERRA

C:\SIERRA> CD LSL3

C:\SIERRA\LSL3> LSL3.BAT

I grew up with Larry. The multiple choice ‘adult verification’ questions in Larry 3 never stopped me ^_^ During my school holidays as a kid, I systematically noted every Larry 3 ‘adult verification question’ in a notebook, categorized alphabetically. Next to each question were four boxes, represnting the A/B/C/D responses to the answers I had guessed. Within a month’s time, the ‘bikini indicator girl’ in the Larry 3 photo was routinely stripped bare of her black pixel clothing, and I was playing Larry 3 on the ‘Totally Raunchy’ level. (And thanks to you and your questions, as a kid, I always thought ‘Senile’ /was/ a river in Egypt!).

Oh, and did I mention that Larry taught me how to type? I get comments all the time about my 100WPM+ typing speed, and I owe it all to Larry!

On a much more recent note, a few months ago, while I was out on the town, a close friend of mine introduced me to her new boyfriend. He was a nice fellow, but we couldn’t seem to sustain a comfortable conversation. Even an hour later, our conversations were still fragmented, unnatural, and generally uncomfortable. But later that night when we were all crammed into a taxi bound for a nightclub, his mobile phone rung. The ringtone of his phone was unique, and I had heard it before somewhere. A few seconds later, I recognized it as the the Leisure Suit Larry theme! At that moment, we bonded. I reintroduced myself to him as a Larry fan, and for the rest of the night, we reminisced about our days as Larry Laffer. We wandered around strange bars which vaguely resembled “Lefty’s”, yelling out ‘Ken Sent Me’ into locked doors.

Well, what can I say. You’re the person in the world who has made me laugh the most. I don’t know if that means anything to you, but, to me, you are THE funniest guy on the planet. Jerry Seinfeld is a great comedian: he’s had me laughing out aloud countless times. But he hasn’t made me laugh anywhere near the amount of times you have. Even as I replay the Leisure Suit Larry games I have stored on my hard disk, I laugh at the jokes all over again. You’re a great person. You’ve got a great witty sense of humor which has definitely influenced mine! Because of you (and Larry), if a girl broke up with me, I’d be more likely to make a Larry-esque wisecrack at the situation than to be upset at the fact I broke up. Thanks Al :-)

Before I finish off this e-mail and hit the ‘send’, I’ve got to ask you a few questions.

1. When you are trying to move along the cliff face in LSL2, every time you fall off and regain your balance, a point is added to your score (the points are taken back off you when you complete the mountain pass though!). Can you do this 'point adding' exercise an unlimited amount of times, so that your score is equal to (or higher) the total score? I got half way there, then gave up.

2. Was the ‘The Laffer Utilities’ meant as parody of ‘The Norton Utilities’?

3. If I write to you, can I get your autograph? :-)

Well, I can’t think up of any more I want to say to the Great Al Lowe, other than, Thanks. Thanks for all the laughs over the years. I owe you.

Larry will always be a part of me.

Cheers,

Paul Douglas

IT student at the University of Queensland

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Oh, and as soon as I ‘perfect’ the Larry ringtone on my Ericsson phone, I’ll send it to you :-)

Hello again, Al.

Yes, I can see it in Sierra’s new games, too. I had to wonder, and what You said, fits. The Larry series could have gone on for a long time, it’s a shame to me, anyway, that Sierra was bought out and that the people who made Sierra what it was, are gone.

You are a very, very, funny and talented person! And, You are kind to reply too.

I sincerely hope that You continue to bring laughs and good programing to us all! In this current stressed out world, We need You, still. Thanks, Al,

Very sincerely,

Christine

Dear Al,

I just wanted to say that you have inspired a Generation. :)

With that said, you rule. :) I grew up with a TI 99-4/a, moved onto the Apple ][e, got the IBM PC, played every single, and while I was mostly a Sierra Advocate, I was more just an Al-Lowe Advocate! Crazy? Yes. Stalker? No. :) Anyways, Larry inspired me to be the person I am today. (Well, and Guybrush Threepwood.) Without Larry, I think I would have gone the "Computer are for nerds" route.. instead Larry taught me that Computers aren't just for nerds, they're for nerds who like to guffaw at something so simple and uniquely funny that you can't help but laugh at it. (Like that salmon commercial. heh.) Without Larry, i'd shudder to think where I'd be now. (Maybe rich and famous like you? but, of course, you had Larry, so there goes THAT idea.) :)

Anyways, Any plans on ever creating more games? tinkering? doing the online-route?

Are they EVER going to do something like TSN/INN again? Do You think? with the advent of high-speed, broadband, always on internet connections, and 56k modems, and super-duper ultra-realistic mega-high resolution cards, you'd think something like TSN/INN would be the STANDARD, since I was running that on a 286-12sx with 4MB of ram, and a 2400 baud modem. *lol*

(And, no, I wasn't old enough to play LSL1 when it came out, but I played it anyway. :) )

Steve Irvan

Just wanted to send a special thank you for all the joy & memories your products have provided me over the years.

Of course, I’m talking about the LSL series, but in my younger years I also enjoyed Donald Duck’s Playground, which was totally innovative for it’s time IMHO.

P.S. Is there a "best place" to buy LSL7 again?

Thank you again!

Robert + friends

Dear Mr. Lowe,

It broke my heart to learn that Larry, whom I have loved sending on adventures for so long, has died at the hands of the software gods. I remember fondly sitting up with my sis playing Larry 1 til down when it first came out. But, no matter how things turn out in the end (perhaps someone will resurrect him in the future), Larry will live on in our hearts forever.

I know you are a busy man, but I just wanted to send you my thoughts, and tell you that your works have brought me countless hours of enjoyment...

Luck and Light to you and yours!

Ms. Chris

Hi, Mr.Lowe!

I hope you'll have the time to anwser this letter, so I could print your reply and make it a poster to stick on my wall!

I'm a 22 years old Analyst/Programmer for a paper mill IT division and I'm from Quebec, Canada, so sorry for my bad English!!! :-)

As you see you're always been and you'll always stay a big influence in my career choice and my life. Let me explain ... (I don't mean to be boring but if you don't care, just jump over that paragraph!)

When I was born in April 1980, my dad was coding a poker game in assembly language on a Z80 personal computer. He was an electronic specialist for a paper mill but computing always been his main interest. I played with his computer (for leisure only since I was too young to be interested in getting more serious with them) but at these times there wasn't much computer games on the market so my dad was coding some basic games for me to play with.

As I grew up my dad took me into the computing world by hiring me as an helper for his little "computer systems" selling company he held home. I saw so much people coming by my house to get their new systems or to get technical support, everything I didn't really understand. Every week, my dad brought me to the bus central where his ordered computing stuff where coming. That included software, so I had about 10 new games per month.

The first Sierra game I played was King's Quest 2. I was 7 years old. The King's Quest series was my favorite. Nobody could do better stories, better sounds, better graphics and better engine than Sierra. At School I was the best at English courses because Sierra games were only english so, in order to play, I didn't have choice to learn!

Someday I was checking the shelves in a Radio-Shack store and I discovered an interesting game called Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. These games were too expensive for me so I asked a friend (who had so many pirated games) if he ever got that game and he said yes! So he brought the game home and we played as my parents weren't home (my dad knew the game and he didn't want me to play due to my young age).

The only way we could past the quiz questions was to answer randomly and hope to have enough correct answers! hah hah!

I was facinated by those games Sierra did so well. I read so many Sierra manuals, hoping to find some personal info about the authors...

I wrote many many letters to Roberta, Ken, you, and other people at Sierra but I never got any answer.

Now, with the internet, this is easier and at least I can let you know that you did change the way i'm leaving now because I always wanted to be into computers, the worlds you created to stimulate my childish imagination will always stay deep in my mind.

Okay okay, no more personal stuff! We don't know each other so you surely don't care about my background, do you? hehe!

I have some questions that I hope you'll answer...

How that the first generation games were developped? I mean, how did you guys were starting a project? I would like to know more about the procedure you were taking, like the meetings, the people tasks and how everything was assembled togheter.

Which language were you using to write the games? And how you did learn programming? What's your computer science background?

I bought the Leisure Suit Larry Collection some years ago and I read your book 4 to 5 times. I can't stop reading the section talking about your work at Sierra... do you have other stories about these times? That makes me dream!

What was a typical working day at these times? When were you waking up? How much time were you coding in a day? Did you work on weekends?

As you might notice I'm very FASCINATED by your work at Sierra and if I lived near I would probably do anything to meet you.

What are you doing by these days?

I hope this e-mail isn't getting annoying... and sorry for my bad english again... I might re-install LSL1-2-3 to practice more! heh heh :-)

Hope to get of your news! I really care about you!

Take care, and say hello to Larry for me!

I just entered on my new job and my boss can't give my anything to do right now because we are moving to a new place soon and everyone's busy so I must "look like" i'm doing something so I tought typing an e-mail would "look like" i'm doing anything. I hate faking that I'm working, I'm leaving with an headeache every day!

I really love your website, I read the interviews and it makes me feel like when I was like 10 years old, playing the LSL games in the basement without sound, aware of my parents sightings! hehehe.

I was once playing LSL1 with my cousin at home, my parents were gone to the grocery store. We were trying to get the girl that works in the hotel to bed in any way... We tried so hard then we got it (you know, giving her the pills, etc...) We were in the tub with that gorgeous girl... then suddenly, we heard my parents car... damn! We didn't save the game and in addition, we were so anxious that I didn't take the time to turn off the computer so I just turned off the monitor! My cousin told me that was a good idea because we could come back later and play.

But the worst thing I expect arrived. My dad got down in the basement to continue his little software programming project and he met the gorgious girl that me and my cousin were trying so hard to sleep with!

My dad had to "hide" the floppies, but some years later I was asking to myself : "why would my father hide the floppies instead of just deleting them or trashing them..."

I still didn't find out ... but I have some doubts about it!

I think I've played every Sierra adventure game, I remember playing Manhunter : San Francisco with a friend and having nightmares for some weeks! But nobody was able to make me feel so good after playing a game, nobody except you Al.

You made me dream, that dreams you put into my childish mind are following me, waiting to be realized. That Reno... always been in my dreams. I always wanted to visit USA... you made me dream of Las Vegas, and I still planning to get there! You introduced me to nightlife so now i'm addicted to it. I really took part in every LSL scene as I was really there. I imagined every scene as it was real and I'm still dreaming to it.

Well... time to get back to reality. I am not a "gamer" anymore. I hate every single game that comes out. Because I can't dream anymore, I can't take a scene and dream about it, because they are now too close to reality. I hate 3D, I hate artificial intelligence they put in some soldier ready to be killed. I don't care about people dying in a "realistic" way. I hate 3dshooters and RPG's... but the sad thing is... those games are leading the gaming market now. I didn't play any good adventure game since LSL7. I didn't enjoy a laugh playing since then. As an Analyst Programmer I contribute to evolution and progress in technology, but as a gamer, I would just get my old 8086 pc back with my cga monitor and find where the hell my dad was hiding the LSL games! Heh heh!

You know, it's been a while since I played any LSL game, and I can remember in detail every scene, every music, every character and every pick-up line, just as if I've been playing yesterday. Why? Because your games where not only fun to play, they were a significant part in my life. I never tought a computer game would change my destiny, but I realized that LSL just did it.

When I was like... 14, 15 years old, I said to myself "Someday, I'll get to Sierra On-Line and see for a all the people who made me feel so good when I was in front of my computer"

I'm spacing out of reality again! I get the same feeling when I'm reading your book!

Hmmm... people are coming by my desk, maybe I should stop "fake working" for a while! I'm kind of dreaming now!

Hi Al Lowe,

I'm Alex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really love your Leisure Suit Larry games!!!!!!!

I think that they are very cool!!!!!!!!

I think you should make more!!!!!!!

Do you know anywhere where I could by them???????

Alex

Thanks, it is refreshing to see another night Al. (Nice buffalo...nice buff Al Lowe) Heh heh. I forgot to add in my first email thanks for keeping Larry’s Casino free and for fighting the establishment in such a small but meaningful way. Without you we could very well still be living in the mid 80s, and I don't know about you but I'm pretty glad I don't know much about

Duran Duran

Dear Al,

During the long, cold, dark winter of 1994-5, my buddies and I spent many a hilarious hour solving whichever LSL game it was where he was in a hotel. The only time I’ve ever had that much fun on a computer, was during group games of “You Don’t Know Jack.”

Al, your humor is priceless and wonderfully welcome in a computer software industry that, for the most part, takes itself WAY too seriously. While there are approximately 100 games on the shelf at CompUSA that will allow me to shoot things, people, stuff, etc., many with real screams and blood effects, not one of these labels has the guts to put out a humorous game about pursuing (and maybe even finding) sex.

This probably has something to do with America’s twisted repression of sex coupled with a moronic, bloodthirsty promotion of violence. It’s OK to let little Johnny watch the bad guys get chewed up by AK-47 rounds, but we have to cover his eyes during the love scene...

I hope you find a new publisher/label - your unique talents would be most welcome to this mature gamer (34 years old) who is now mostly playing “Sea Dogs”, “Tropico” and “Flight Simulator.”

Best of luck, sincerely,

Jefferson T. Packer

I have not so many words to describe Larry: He is the greatest!!

And you too, of course!

Hi Al,

I have a question you sure heard from many Larry fans before. Why didn’t you finish Larry 8? You were the mastermind of the whole project and you could make Larry by yourself with another team, without Sierra. I just saw the small movie of Larry 8 from your website and I must say that it would have been a really cool game which would definitely be a top-seller. The money wouldn’t be that important for you I think but you could make a lots of fans happy with the final episode of Larry ( just this last one, please ;-) ).

cu,

Dennis

Dear Al,

First of all I have to congratulate you on a fantastic carear of some truly well written games.

Unfortunatly I still seek larry 7. Dont worry im not here to ask you for it, i was just wondering if you would mind me learning the larry tune and playing it as part of a guitar solo in our bands set? Its such a good tune its the only thing my unmusicly minded best friend can remember out of ten years of gaming. 555-6969 is also one of the only fone numbers that has constantly stuck in my head through out my life. More fun on the end of that number though than anyone else i could call. anyway, my band is a rock/metal band and we are developing some ego solo's as part of the set, and if its ok with you I would like to play the larry theme, heavy, with lots of wah.

Hopefully one day we will see larry again, untill then, keep up the good work with the site and take care.

Mike, Brighton, UK

Hello. I´m a half famous writer/comedian who live in Finland and I´ve been a fan of your Leisure Suit Larry games for years. I recently discovered your e-mail on your website and just thought I should drop you a line since you insprired me a lot in my work and my depraved sexual nature...anyway this is really a thank-you letter from me to you saying that I among thousands, admire your sense (or maybe scent since that Cybersniff 2000 thing?!) of humour and work. You might even see your name in my "Thank you for inspiration" in the beginning of my next book.

That´s all I wanted to say really. I'll end with two questions:

1) LSL 8 is really a dead project, or is it? If you think there might be the slightest chance of a LSL 8 being made, please tell me since I need another Larry fix badly!

2) Have you ever wondered why no one has made a movie about Leisure Suit Larry? I know it's impossible to get such a great game as Love for Sail to be an even better movie, but on today´s market a funny sexy game like Leisure Suit Larry (pick a number!) would make a hell of a good movie! (I always pictured like Kevin Spacey like a good Larry...well anyway...) Just a thought and not a particulary dirty one I might add.

Well, keep up the good work, I know I will!

Jeff Stryker

Hi Al (or one of the many allowe.com staffers),

Just wanted to say thanks Al, you and your team’s brilliant adult comedy really helped me through the wonder years and have turned me into the man I am today. Gee thanks a lot... :)

Allow me to point out that Lucas Arts has recently announced the sequels of it’s two classic oldie adventure games Sam & Max, and Full Throttle 2. This sounds like very good news for Al Lowe and Liesure Suit Larry. I believe the success of these sequels will determine the reaction of other gaming companies. Perhaps Mike Ryder caught this news back in February and got a little eager before settling down a bit. But I believe if these games are successful, Al Lowe will be getting another call soon. It might take another year or so after these games are released and posted on the top 10 charts. Please please be very receptive to the Sierra execs. Being skeptical may only convince them to give up all together. Being optimistic might pay off w/ the funds to at least get started. Then after they’ve dedicated their money, -then- you can break the bad news to them about all the raunchiness their virginal brains will have to swallow, and conditions Da Man demands to be met.

Finally, I’ve played all the lsl games, and I’m a recently graduated software engineer w/ experience in OpenGL, UML, C, C++, Java, etc. I’ve got one hell of a sense of humor, and I’ll even play the role as intern or beta tester just to be a part of the team if another lsl game is produced. Good luck, and if you need hard working / motivated, phucking phunny frontier pholk, please reply and I’ll send a resume. I think it’d help me get laid more. Remember, I put the fun in funny! (rimshot, drum roll, audience groan)

Long Live Laffer,

Matt Miller

Hi,

I really liked The 'Abe' Joke, very clever!

Did You write all The Paul-Paul jokes?...Hey, they were funny!....One of the best parts of LSL3...Well, it's hard to figure which parts were the most or not, It will always be my favorite computer game...

I found a copy of 'Shivers 2' Yesterday, a brand new store opened up here in San Diego And It carries a lot of Sierra's good stuff from way back...Just in case anyone is bugging you, and I think I did, too, about where to find Sierra's good stuff...I like the way The Game pans, It's nice and creepy, too...

I'll always be one of Your greatest fans,

Sincerely,

Christine

WOW, I can't believe that there is NO WAY i can get the old Leisure Suit Larry games. I played 1, 6, and 7 and I loved them. Al Lowe, your a genius. Well last night I was talking to my husband about the greatest games ever and I said of course Leisure Suit Larry came out of my mouth!! I was like I want to get the ones I never played. So I have been searching online ALL night, and no luck, Then I read your website and found out that they discontinued the pleasure pack....I could Cry!! I saw a copy on e-bay for $150.....That's crazy....Well just wanted to tell that Larry was awesome and I wish that they never stopped making the games! Thanks for making me laugh!

Raquel Burke

I'm 45 years old and I'm BORED! I'm sick of all the crap games out there full of blood and guts. I want LARRY! WHERE IS LARRY 8?????!!!!! Give us 40 something people a decent, fun game.

Debby

Hi Mr. Lowe

I have been playing adventure games since I was 9 years old, the first been lsl1. I have played every single Larry game that you ever made. What ever happened to Larry 4. There were rumors back in the early 90’s that the floppies were stolen.

I have been your biggest fan and only came across your site recently. I have mailed Sierra on a number of occasions asking if you still worked there and or if I could get your e-mail address. I never received a reply.

Sierra was the best game company in the world, No body else in the industry could come close to it and it was yourself that made it that way. Since I found out that Sierra was bought out and you no longer worked there I changed my mind.

There are no more quests, Adventure games around. I have started replaying all of my quests over again these consist of Larry’s, Police Quest’s, Space Quest’s, King’s Quest’s, Quest for Glory, Hero’s Quest. Legend Of Kyrandia and the list goes on.

Will you ever make adventure games again?

What languages did you code your games in?

If you don’t mind sharing, How did you go about it?

If I ever get to The USA could we meet for lunch?

Mr. Lowe I am so passionate about your work/games that I actually feel sad and rather upset when I think to myself that the worlds best game developer no longer makes games, That the Company Sierra is not really Sierra anymore. I’ve spent my whole life playing quests and now they are no more. These new 3D shooter games and strategy games are a waist of time, You don’t bond with the game, you don’t become Larry Laffer or Roger Wilkow when your playing a game, you run around and kill everything that you see. You don’t need to think anymore. I find that games as we know them today are not doing anything good for the youth. It makes the youth Violent!! Quests would make you think and upset you when you get stuck but at the same time enable you to enjoy yourself, you get to loose yourself in a world of fantasy for days on end.

I apologies for rambling on like this, I just don’t have a clue how to express my appreciation for giving me the best 16 years of my life that was spent on a computer. Think about this, nobody knows who programmed any of these new games but mention your name and everyone knows who you are. You’re a legend of note and nobody will ever be able to come remotely close to you. Please be so kind as to reply to my e-mail so that I can frame it.

Thank you for reading my mail, I already feel honored just knowing that I mailed it to you.

Best Regards,

Bart Rudzinsksi

Hello Al,

Being a huge fan of your LSL games (and STILL wishing for LSL8) I was just wondering : 1- What would be holding you back from buying the rights back to LSL (getting a loan or something)? Sierra would actually be the loser because, although they would get the short-term "profits",you would get the long-term profits and be able to pay the loan off quite quickly. 2- how about using the same format but a different charater and trying for Lucas Arts to promote it. 3- Is this "so-called" president (notice I used a small "P") listen to the people. He ought to read the fan mail. Well, point taken, the games of today simply suck. You're either shooting some army or building roller coasters, neighborhood families or cities. There's absolutely nothing (I go to Electronic Boutique every other day hoping to see a AL Lowe game!) on the market today or the last several years since Love For Sail, that'll make you laugh like LSL. Even my younger sister has come to know Larry (she hated the manager yelling "COFFEE!! over and over while I tried to figure out what to do. She said "Reyguel, give that man some coffee!"). Finally, do you REALLY think there's a chance we'll see another LSL game? Being a musician for 30 years (Piano player) I get a kick from playing the theme song - I learned it by ear while playing. Well, thank you for taking the time to read this long e-mail.And know that we Larry fans are patient -VERY patient. I hope to hear from you soon.

Reyguel Nious

Sir,

I first encountered LSL when I was on a temporary assignment in Albequerque NM in the 1980's. We were looking for something fun to do when one of the guys said come to his room, that he had this great hilarious game on his computer. We ended up about 20 of us in his room laughing ourselves silly and typing all kinds of things in the computer trying to get Larry laid. We were up until the sun rose! So between Larry and sharing Bacardi and Coke every time we advanced the game, that became one of the most memorable times in my military career. Most of us still keep in touch and laugh about that weekend. Since then I have bought the other games and they make great entertainment with friends. Thanks for the memories!!!! I was just wondering with all the new advances, are you going to make a LSL 21st century? You are a cyber-entertainment genius!!!

Sincerely,

Sharon B

Hello again, this is the second time I am writting to you, oh Mr. Al Lowe the great. The first time was a year ago asking you about some designing how-to about Larry 7. This time I am just writting as a great fan of your Larry work which has inspired me as a kid and built my sense of humor and love for comics. I first played that game when i was about 12 and now I'm almost 17. Don't worry I haven't been playng that game all this time, I just had an urge to congradulate you, especially after reading those sad stories about how Larry 8 will never be released.

By the way I live in Cyprus, an island in the mediterranean with the best beaches in the world. You should come here for vacations next summer :)

I hope you always keep on brightening our faces

Anyway best regards,

Andreas Panayides

I can't believe this.

Monkey Island is making a comeback. Full Throttle is making a comeback... Why can't SIERRA see that they have a HUGE potential here to remake the classics I and THOUSANDS of others grew up with into a great 3D adventure (ala Monkey Island 4, etc) I mean - seeing Laffer in 3D would make my stupid life complete.

Al, Is there anyway, or is there something I can help with, to get the rights to Larry to you, and make LSL8 happen in DirectX9 glory?

Larry is gaming to me.... I can't imagine a gaming generation with Larry... but sadly, this is where we are.....

PS: I goto the parties each year on holloween as Larry... It's really more of an excuse to wear a leasure suit than anything else. the first game i played of yours was duck on the C64.. then when I was 13 I played LSL1 AGI on my friends super-spiffy 8086. Then I got hooked.... and here I am today :-) Replaying LSL7 pretending that I haven't playedit before.

I hope this is ok, but LSL3 is still my favorite. LSL3 is the Godfather Part II in my book.

Dan

Hi Al Lowe,

Very very strange a best seller game and they don´t want to make a new part of it..... Larry 7 is an acceptable game to play nowaday´s due to the graphics but the power of larry is the feeling and the sense of humor. I think that it´s time for a new larry in a modern style. But may I have an idea there is an dutch software companey davilex (www.davilex.nl) they produced a lot of games for the netherlands and another few country´s in europe. It´s a big business but small in accosiation with sierra or another big american companies. Maybe they want to make a new larry game? I hope u can use this tip.

GreetingZ René

p.s. Today I had the collector´s box with al the larry games new in my collection but only larry six doesn´t work due to problems with my voodoo III 3000 video card :(

Hey there Mr. Lowe,

My name is Mariah Osmundson. I have loved Sierra and your games all my life. (I'm 21 now)

I remember growing up, all I wanted was to be a Sierra game designer like you and Roberta Williams and Mark Crowe, and everyone else who worked there in the golden age of computer gaming. (You know, when games were GOOD?)

It makes me so sad to see all the greatest games dead in their tracks, all the developers tossed by the wayside. You guys are my heroes. It's so horrible this happened. I kept telling myself, it's ok, they'll regroup, into another company like when they had Dynamix and Coktel Vision. But it hasn't ever happened.

I think its just a shame great game designers like you EVER get asked to clean out your office. It's sick. It's insanity. Look at the crap they produce now, discracing the name of Sierra, the name you guys forged with your blood, sweat and tears. Just sick.

I know there are others like me too, who would give you the 2-3 million you need for a new Larry game or a new Space Quest, if we only had it to give. I hate to see the glory of computer games die, it was my whole childhood. Hell, I don't want to become a computer game designer now if I can't make good games.

Sorry if I sound odd. I'm not really that weird. Just heartbroken at the state of games today, and all that I read on your website about what they did to you. I mean I used to read about you in InterAction magazine when I was young. You guys were my idols, how could they do this to you?

I've tried to write to Roberta Williams before, but never succeeded. The girl at Sierra HR said she'd try to forward it, but never a reply. I did get in touch with Jeff Tunnel, the guy who made one of my all time favorite games, Willy Beamish. (what am I thinking? You knew he made that.) Have you seen his site? www.garagegames.com? It's really great. He's trying to instill the magic of game making into the young hopeful game designers of the world. I think he's doing such a good thing. But I really wish guys like you and him were still at the helm. I mean, how inspiring is it to think hey maybe I'll get kicked out of my office someday when a corporation takes over my home-grown game company?

Ahh, well. I just really wanted to write to you and say you're a hero of mine and I played almost all your games, and I think you're just great! I've wanted to tell you guys that for years. You people are so amazing and creative. And I still want to be like you.

Thanks for so many years of happiness and entertainment. You rock!

-Mariah Osmundson

Mr. Lowe,

The monkey joke where he swallows the cue ball was hilarious. I usually find your jokes you send great, but this one had me crying with hysteria. I just had to write you to let you know. BTW, recently I showed my fiance's family some of the easter eggs in Larry 7, they thought it was hilarious. Just thought I'd let you know that all these years later and your comedic sense of humor is still knocking em dead. Keep up the good work.

Your Fan

Clyde McCorkle

Mr. Lowe,

I doubt this will reach you, since it is impossible to reach any one of fame these days, but I will still write this in hopes! My name is Josh Taylor(21), I am photographer from Elkhart, Indiana. Just recently, I had the awesome chance of going to South Africa to shoot a documentary on Great White sharks for National Geographic! Anyway, enough about me!!! Ever since I can remember, my father and I played computer games!! The only games I liked were police quest, kings quest, leisure suit larry, freddy pharkas......those were my life when I was a kid!! So my question for you is, is there any possible way to meet the man that made some of these awesome games? Maybe even shadow you for a week, see how you do things? I would just like to see how you do things, and what you are like! Please get back to me!

Thanks,

Josh Taylor

P.S. Make a new Freddy!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Mr. Lowe,

I have E-mailed you before and on your joke mailing list through a different E-mail. But let me get started by saying i love your cyber jokes it really makes me smile when i ready in the morning. But i was saddened recently when i read about how you are getting the run around by sierra for LSL 8. Is there any possibility that LSL 8 will be picked up by another manufacture or sierra going to pick up LSL again now that Full throttle 2 is scheduled to be made. If you could please let me know i would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Greg Frank

Hello, Mr. Lowe,

I am writing you to get information as to how I can complain or request Sierra to bring Larry back. Leisure Suit Larry is my all time favorite series of games. Leisure Suit Larry In The Land Of The Lounge Lizards (VGA Mode) was the first computer game I ever played. I was around 7 or 8 when I played it and I was addicted to it from there on. I have each individual LSL game and I have the pleasure pack. This morning I broke out LSL 7 Love For Sail and played and it reminded me of how much I love that game. I became curious when in LSL 7 the main room of the boat if you click on any of the above floors they make reference to LSL 8 Lust In Space by saying "You Can't Go Up There, Those Floors Are Reserved For Leisure Suit Larry 8 Lust In Space". I would like to get a petition signed by many and send it to Sierra requesting the revival of LSL 8. Please E-Mail me back at Codemaster124@aol.com I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerily

Alex Szemplinski Jr.

Very geerter Mr. Lowe, I am a large fan you and your game hero Larry. I ask myself, why there is not to be a continuation of LSL more. I ask myself in addition, why there was no fourth part. Does there continue to be no possibility, Leisure Suit Larry to producing?

Yours sincerely

Dominik Noelke

Hello, Mr. Lowe!

I am a 14-year old student at Clay County High School in a small rural town called Clay, WV. I've been trying to make some games with Brian Provinciano's SCI game engine. I am a big fan of the Sierra adventure games like Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, King's Quest, etc. and I can say my favorite book is The Official Book of Leisure Suit Larry (Special Edition). I'm writing you to say I really admire all of your work and Sierra's work. Say Hello to Roberta for me :)

Tony Woods

I enjoyed the larry games so much over the past 15 years. It's a shame the killed them. Maybe a new game and character is on the way ? Maybe based on the internet guru programmers ?

Joe

Hi,

I just found your site on the Internet and was very suprised: I grew up with “Donald Duck´s Playground” and “The Black Cauldron” on the C64, but I had never known that this Games came from you! So thank you for hours of fun, playing together with my friends in front of a small Computer-Screen while trying to catch some fruits or working at the airport as Donald ;-) ! Not to forget later, when we found out the magic words “Ken sent me”, - even if we hadn´t a clue, what their meaning was (german kids... what can I say...). Wow... we had great times... Today my English isn´t really better, but I hope you understand this words: THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. LOWE !

Hey Al,

I’m such a big fan, I’ve played all the leisure suit Larry’s and all the quest games to date..

I loved them all, so much fun, just a little bummed that they don't make them like they use to and releasing them fast like they use to.

I also watched your interview at TechTV's Screen Savers, good job on it, I would also like to see more leisure suit Larry games especially 4. So would my friends, even if its a classic one like leisure suit Larry 1 graphics (not the remake) they are still fun and adventurous no doubt. If you need any help to with them, my friend programs, and I’m a web developer which I could also do some graphics up to help you guys out. Id love to see more games and even a new series.. I still play them as of this date and I still get a laugh at them. Everyone I talk to too misses all the older sierra games. Everyone is not just into first person shooter, If you made them liek you use to I bet they wouls sell like hot cakes again.

Keep up the good work Al. Love your site as well. I think I went to every page on it. Heh

Hope to keep in touch. (Long Live Larry)

G'day Mr.Lowe,

As a long time fan of Leisure Suit Larry, and player since 1988, I just recently flashed back to playing Land of the Lounge Lizards on a University computer with a monochrome screen alongside about 20 mates. I had over time purchased and played every version of the Leisure Suit Larry series 1,2,3(on Amiga),5,6 & 7. For some reason Larry popped into my mind a few weeks ago, I guess my mind was getting tired of playing many games these days that seem to focus on warfare, sports and so on.

It had been a long time since I last played Leisure Suit Larry 7 and I had since given away all my originals of the games, so I jumped online to try and find out where I could purchase them again. Unfortunately I have been unsuccessful in finding anywhere that sells New versions of any of the games in the series, not even Amazon.com that was linked to your site. I then jumped onto eBay and couldn't beleive that prices that used versions of the games were being sold for. Well in true Larry fashion, I started bidding for these games I wanted to play again and $500 later I have in the mail 1,2,3,5,1vga,6,7,Greatest Hits, Collection Series and Ultimate Pleasure Pack($100+) that in their time would have been purchased for under $200, but I am happy and very anxiously awaiting their delivery.

You are probably thinking, wow you could have scored maybe 5 women with that $500.....lol

Or, ok I have heard this many times lately...

What I am ultimately writing this email for is to let you know that after searching high and low, bidding high and low, and spent many hours in the pursuit of Leisure Suit Larry, I have noticed that there are quite a few, well 100's is my view, of fans that a very similar to myself.

Then the following questions have come to mind:

1. Why isn't Sierra looking at re releasing the Leisure Suit Larry Ultimate Pleasure Pack when their is interest for it ?

2. Does Al Lowe have the full rights to Leisure Suit Larry ?

3. If he does, would he consider a proposition to allow someone to produce and place on the market a re release of LSLUPP, or entertain the idea of a special edition release of LSLUPP that is limited to a certain number of copies for a royalty of course ?

Well Mr.Lowe, I guess I require answers to the above questions to either fuel or extinguish what my mind is churning around inside. Thank you for creating Leisure Suit Larry, and bringing humour to the gaming world and many peoples lives. I look forward to your reply.

Regards

Wade Shelley

Al,

I grew up with both of your games “Winnie the Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood”, and “Mickey’s Space Adventure”. Mickey’s was definitly my favorite as it involved space, but in terms of art work Winnie the Pooh was the best. Those two games also kept me glued to the computer for hours on end, which went on to become my career as a Sys. Admin/IT Director at age 24.

I wanted to say thanks for two great games that were apart of my childhood, and allowed me to learn + have fun at the same time.

PS - If they can make “Chips 2000”, the Yankees can lose a world series, OJ can go free, Bush can become president, and John Travolta can make a come back.... there is always a chance Sierra will let LSL8 become a reality.

PPS - LSL3 was also very educational as I had to always go to the encyclopedia to get past your age check for full frontal nudity :)

Hi great Al,

I was wondering if there was any new information from sierra regarding Leisure Suit Larry. I also watched your interview at 'the screen savers' and it was pretty good! I sent another email to sierra hoping they will reconsider bringing 'the Laffer' back but that will probably not help.

I was also wondering if you developed any new Larry-things apart from the 3d-Larry, because even if you don't own the rights to Larry you still have the power to create some nice game-scenes I think.

WE WANT LARRY, WE WANT LARRY!!!!!

Greetings from a major fan,

Berry Notten,

Just wanted to drop a line and say i have always loved your games (matter of fact i have all of the Leisure Suit Larry collection). And hated to hear about them stopping them .. Much luck to you in the future and i hope you get a chance to make more games like this ..

Alan Todd

Hello Al you may not know me but i am one of your biggest fans, Your work of creating Larry is great. I only started to become your fan like one year ago because one day when i was going through my CD`s i found a Cd called "Leisure Suit Larry Collector`S Edition I,II,III,V,VI" And i thought ‘what is this CD?’ So i gave it a try and found that the game was great.

At first i was a bit stuck but then i cheated by going on the net to find cheats. Well the reason i emailed you is because i wanted to say that your games are great and secondly to say that i reckon that you should keep on making Leisure Suit Larry games. Although i never played Larry Leisure Suit number V and VI because when i found that CD it was a bit scratch up and was unable to install number 5 & 6, I still think that there great games.

Anyway thanks for spending a bit of your time to read this

Your number 1 fan

Hi, Mr. Lowe,

I’ve just been rererereplaying (and then some) the Larry games and having a great time with them. The Larry series is still the adventure game series I find myself laughing the loudest with. (Which just goes to prove there’s no humor like bodily function humor. :) Seriously, they’re seriously funny and, even more importantly, FUN.)

To further enhance my enjoyment, I’ve been browsing your Humor Site. It’s a wonderful place to visit for an old-timing adventure game fan like myself (I started with Zak McKracken for Commodore 64). It’s also a heart-warmingly approachable site. This is, sadly, in sharp contrast with Sierra’s current web pages, although the addition recently of a Space Quest page there was a nice surprise. (Even if they only feature pictures of the box artwork on there.)

Once again, thanks for all the years of wonderful entertainment. Of all the adventure game series I’ve encountered on my travels, yours was the most <choke> human!

-Simo Sakari Aaltonen-

God love ya Al!! I need more Larry!!!

Add this to the numerous other mailings you have to be getting, and berrate Sierra into making another Leisure Suit Larry...

Thanks, by the way, for all those years of laughs.

Gus

Dear Al,

I’m writing you because I just visited your larry homepage and just read the letters your fans send to you... Now, you know what, Al? You should just not care about Sierra! You are Al Lowe, you just made 7 (!!!) series of Larry, so don’t worry! You will make Larry 8, Larry 9, Larry 10 and on.

Why? Why not. Because people need it, and everybody know Larry was the father of PC adventure games. You know what I’m saying. I completed all the parts of LSL, from my childhood years, and it really that was the first game i saw and played on PC!!!! I just loved it the first time!

I read a lot of about the creating of Larry, the background, and on. I heard about the story of Larry 4: “The Missing Floppies” and I think you did a mystic history. I don’t love the word fan, I don’t feel myself a fan, but I have to say I love Larry and listen: If Sierra won’t let you make the next parts of Larry, then I will help you make it , so with Sierra or without Sierra you can be absolutely calm because you will create it and I don’t know a fool who doesn’t want Larry to be continued and doesn’t want to sponsor it!

And the law side when they really don’t let you use the name “LSL” you have to rename it but Lust In Space is not a copyrighted name max. LSL won’t be LSL anymore but eg. LeChuck Larry (joking) , or Love Larry, or whatever so you know I mean...

I think my mail won’t be amid your mails on the site, but the only important thing is just you read it, you may answer it.

Your truly,

Sajo

Hi Al,

I’m sure you are a busy man and that reading your volumous email alone would occupy the day, so I’ll try to make this brief... ...loved LSL1-4 (the only ones I ever played)! LSL1 got me into adventure games at age 12. Not only did I learn a lot of trivia getting past age verification, I also learned what a prophylactic was! LSL1 put me at the head of my middle school history and sex ed classes!

In 7th grade my Mormon buddy and I snuck out of a movie theatre to buy up the newest LSL3 game (I think that was the first VGA one.) A Mormon! Now that’s some market saturation.

Also in 7th grade, I had to take Home Economics. We had to actually design a pillow. And the expectation was of something pastel with lacy frilly stuff, mind you! So, mine was a giant pillow in the likeness of Larry’s head (don’t tell IP people at Sierra, please!) It was beautiful, and the other two kids in the class that had played Larry thought it was hilarious that no one else knew what kind of fellow this Larry was. Certainly not the type of guy to be placed amongst unicorns, Smurfs, and rainbow pillows.

Like the late, great Chris Farley portrayed on his The Chris Farley Show from SNL, I’m feeling like the little kid who’s interviewing a celebrity, and in lieu of probing, interesting questions, I just try to invoke some old memory of some great work of his: “You remember when you had Passionate Patty slide down pole in a way the the narrator described as, ‘Not Wholly Unfamiliar’ to her?” I use Not Wholly Unfamiliar in conversation still today. Another example of LSL-world bleeding into reality, I didn’t know what the hell LAX was on top of the Los Angeles International Airport. I was just a rural boy from PA. I thought it was some kind of joke about laxitives or something. Years later, having taken on my first plane flight, gone to college, and now inhabiting Santa Barbara, CA, I’ve seen the real LAX and was horribly disappointed to learn that it did not have a big LAX sign on top of the terminals!

Well, good night. But first, how about you start a new adventure game company? The market is ripe and you have a great name. The technical stuff (game engine) is pretty solid in the free-software arena, looking at FreeSCI or AGS. Or heck, write one yourself. And you probably have contacts with some very talented Sierra artists (and you can compose the music yourself, right?) If you need some hands on deck, you just give me a haller.

PS. Were you on Name That Tune in the 70s or early 80s? I remember watching that show years ago and seeing someone named Al Lowe on there who looked somewhat like you.

Al, my good friend, it is time and you know it.

I, am a graphic artiste...I have friends who program. I am offering to help you give people what they have wanted for all these years. That's right, it is the eighth chapter of one of the most beloved graphic adventure series of all time. (Drums roll) LEISURE SUIT LARRY 8!!!

Ok, this is getting too corny.

Please, as one of your many fans: If you're willing to write the script for Leisure Suit Larry 8: Lust in Space, I'd be more than happy to produce it, I don't care about profit, I love your work.

Games just aren’t what they used to be. You can see that LucasArts has tried bringing back memories with Monkey Island, and have failed but at least they tried. Please, give LSL8 a chance. If people don’t like it then it doesn’t matter, you have nothing to lose. At least we know people have asked for it, so do it for them.

Jonathan Moore

Greetings Mr. Lowe!

First of all THANK YOU for Larry. Your work has been truly phenomenal.

I’ll get straight to the point. Why don’t you start a new project which does not involve Larry? Why not create a new character and build a game around him/her? I’m sure that hundreds of people would be interested as soon as people hear about a new game by you, even if it’s not Larry. The game would have all the elements that make people want to play Larry games. Getting volunteers to cover every single aspect of this game and creating an online team would be extremely easy if you are willing to start such a project.

The downside? Well, it would take a lot of time, and there’s probably not a lot of profit involved... maybe none... The upside: I haven’t played a decent adventure game in 6 years. I think you are one of the only people in the world who can help! That and the warm fuzzy feeling you feel when you finish a game.

Regards,

Ehsan

Hello Al,

I wanted to write you to say thanks for all the fun you brought into my life through your games. I’ve enjoyed them for over a decade now. A good friend of mine who is on your joke list emailed you two months ago to thank you as well, and told you how innovative he thought Donald Duck’s Playground was.

He was right, and here’s the ironic thing: I am currently creating what I believe will be the next generation of gaming on the Internet. And do you know what’s amazing? Some of the fundamentals come from that old game! Was it, hmmm, 20 years ago? Talk about ahead of it’s time!

The overall scope of this new project is HUGE, and as we get further along, I would love for you to be an adviser / designer / godfather for this “virtual world” if you are interested.

Again, I can’t thank you enough for all that cool humor. You’ve made people laugh. You’ve helped them release stress. You’ve been an inspiration to me and you’ve made the world a better place. :)

Thank you,

David DaVinci

Al,

I can imagine the hundreds of emails you receive each day concerning Leisure Suit Larry But dont blame me! Blame retrogamers.com or I would not have known you had a website :)

I was suprised to see you still support the game and it is inspiring to the people that played your adventure. The series were magnificent, I think LSL2 was my favourite not falling far from LSL3, but I really enjoyed the humor of the game and the characters and their personas It really gave the player a wild imagination. Well not wild but Im sure you know where Im coming from.

I truly believe even to this day there is always a stand for another Larry adventure.

Personally If I were you, I would start a POLL and await for the visitors to show you where Larry stands. Im sure hes not lying down (dead) I think hes in hibernation mode. Some day he will wake up, breeze through the beautiful islands and penthouse towers to find his true lovergirl.

Sierra must do something. You cant start a car without the engine. Al Lowe you know where you stand.

Best of luck...

Larry D

Al Lowe:

You're one of my greatest fans and one of the most looked upon computer game developers of all time. ( know because I create computer games and never as funny as yours) Ever since the first Larry came out I have been playing your Leisure Suit Larry game series. I am played all of the series and loved every minute of it. About a month ago, I pulled out my old computer, booted up Windows 3.1 / DOS and installed the first ever Leisure Suit Larry game. I think that the best part of the entire game is within the first two minutes when you stand outside of the bar, wait a few minutes and a dog comes by a pees on Larry. Those moments when Larry did not even have to do anything to get in trouble or piss someone off, are the moments that make Larry who Larry is. Those were the good old times when video games were bleeding edge and Sierra games were the best. I guess in some message boards there are some talks that you may make a comeback and do another Larry. I sure hope so and would support you 100%.

I do have a question in all of this and I bet you get a lot of people asking but here goes. I just moved from Colorado to TX and somewhere along the way, I have lost, my entire Sierra collection of games. This would have included Gold Rush, Leisure Suit Larry Ultimate Pleasure Pack, Roberta Williams Anthology as well as FreddyPharkas 96' CD set. I guess with my current luck (just like Larrys') places like ebay do not have the FreddyPharkas CD set nor the Gold Rush game and every bid that I seem to place, gets taken at the last minute for the Ultimate Pleasure Pack and Anthology Kings Quest set.

Its sad when all a guy wants to do is play sierra games, and cannot even get his hands on a copy of his most favorite titles. Do you know or have contact with anyone who might be willing to sell their copy of the aforementioned games? ( I am willing to pay)

As a Digital Media Studies and Computer Science major, I was in the planning stages of creating walk though worlds of Kings Quest, Gold Rush, Larry and even Freddy Pharkas' worlds. This was going to be an interactive multimedia website and each of the games that seem to have gone missing would have been the basis for this entire site. Now that the games are missing, I am unable to play them to document each character and their adventures though their own life. (this online website would be some what like the book King's Quest Companion by Peter Spear but for all of the four series above)

If you or anyone you might know who has a copy of any of the games, please could you email me with their contact information or forward them this email.

Thanks for making the best computer games in the world and I hope to be playing Larry again real soon.

Steven Perry

Hello, Mr Lowe.

It wouldn’t be fair if I do not open this message giving congratulations (and of course, thanks) to you, and all the Larry team, that brought us all this legendary sierra games. As Mr.Ken said, it is a shamed that something that began too happy ended too bad, but we at least can keep them in memory and more - playing them and giving comments about them - like a family album when you read. (It’s a shame that most of the games now are just graphics -and a poor story or not story at all)

I can say you this is something I really care. I come from Venezuela and I can tell you that in spite of begin a hispanic country - kind of far away from U.S.A, this games were pretty famous in a little town I lived. (Ah - And with the english ..., a big advantage since we learn it this way:Playing adventure games). (I Hope I do not dissapoint you with my english)

Well , Mr Lowe. It’s been nice contacting you and I really appreciate you have read my message(If you’ve come this far - you would have probably did it- just joking...). Please contact me if there’s any problem with the file or anything else you would like to tell me.

Regards. Thank you very much.

Carlos

Dear. Mr. Al Lowe,

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for the much fun and pleasure that you had brought me growing up. I grew up buying and playing your games (The Leisure Suit Larry Series) which has brought so much fun and enjoyment to my life. I remember the days of saving my pocket money and looking forward to purchasing the new releases of The Leisure Suit Larry. I always enjoyed the games and the character that you had created and now that I am older I still enjoy to play the games which brings back so much sweet memories. I think it is such a shame that you did not release any more games with Leisure Suit Larry as it was fantastic.

I wish you all the very best in your life and hope that you will always be happy and laughing with that great sense of humour of yours.

Thank You again.

Tommy Walker

Great site!!! I love all series-it's a great quest!!! not long ago, i saw a packge that includes all the series, but someone relly anoying already bought it!!!! sorry for my bad english... al lowe, you are the k-i-n-g!!

Al, or Mr Lowe, if you prefer

I decided i’d be generic person #4631 to tell what a huge fan i am. Yours, and the games made by your cohorts at sierra, were the first games I played on my first computer. To be specific, Quest for Glory 1 remake was the first, as i was to young for Leisure Suit Larry and my mom wouldn’t let me get it. So naturally one day i go to the store anyway and get it and don’t tell her, 4 diskettes for LSL3 if I remember, blue ones in fact. But if i have to choose, LSL 6 was actually my favorite of them. Don’t really know why, just was. That was you driving on the first floor on that cart, wasn’t it?

But i come to ask more of a question than anything and I’m sure it’s been asked 1000 times over or you have contemplated it just as many times over. Why don’t you make your own game, you don’t need Larry, and acording to that Freddy Pharkas site you do technically own the copyright to that, so make a sequal. But i ask this, (more a personal favor ;) ) make it in the old style, 256 colors etc.

I found this website called www.hero6.com they’re going to make a game similar to the QG series, same style anyway. So i saw that and figured well if they could do it, surely you could do it faster and better and know a person or 2 who’d be willing to help. But i’m rambling...just a thought.

Hope this recieves you well. But, if nothing else, enjoy retirement and good luck at golf.

Mike

Hi,

If you really are Mr. Al Lowe, just wanted to stop in and say "Hi!". Thanks for the great memories throughout the past years since the mid 80's. I have played "Softporn Adventure" on the Atari 8-bit(in BASIC), converted from the Apple version. When I Played LSL (no, not "Link Support Layer for 802.2 IPX networks"), I have seen the similarities, and always thought of LSL as the graphical Softporn Adventure until the other LSL series came out. I then thought of LSL as the Al Lowe series of Larry. When I first seen the password in the bar, in LSL1, where it was "Ken sent me.", I did not get it. I do realize now this is probably a reference to Ken Williams.

About the Larry 4 thing, I would call it "pulling an Andy Kaufman". :-)

Also, you are great on Sax. I like it!

Also, I hope you stay in touch with Scott Murphy. Throughout many Sierra games (LSL and SQ series except 5), I can feel it when he is involved and like what he adds. Gary Owens is great too! I think he only narrated SQ4 and 6 though.

Take care,

Vince

Hi Al!

I’ve been a long time fan of yours thanks to your brilliant work on the LSL series- and like most people, am saddened about Sierra deciding not to make any more. (You have no idea how much I was looking forward to LSL8. I STILL play the LSL games I have!)

Anyway, I just thought I’d email you to let you know that I love your site- thankyou for the Larry sheet music, too! I want to get the Larry theme on my mobile phone- yet nowhere seems to have it! As soon as I can sort it out, I might be having Larry’s theme play when my phone rings!

I’m something of a computer geek myself, and have become a tad into those “quiz” things that seem to be all the rage right now in everyone’s blogs and stuff... coming up with new ideas seems to be hard because there’s a quiz for EVERYTHING lately... well, nearly everything- I noticed no one had paid homage to the LSL babes in one- so I have. It’s at: http://www.geocities.com/superflysparky/lslquiz

if you’re interested or you want a laugh- I’m Captain Thygh, my boyfriend’s Merrily Lowe, and I’ve just posted it today, so no one else has done it. But there’s 21 potential results- all the women from 5, 6, and 7 (I haven’t played any of the previous LSLs) and I just HAD to include Peggy from number 7- she kicks ass!

Anyway, once again, thanks for creating a game which has had me laughing out loud literally at my computer, and which has totally rocked the world as we know it. Sierra mightn’t realise it, but your work is amazing, and you totally kick ass! (And I’m a 21 year old woman who’s been playing Larry since her early teens- not exactly Sierra’s “target market,” eh?)

Sincerely,

Jessie Cran

Dear Al

How are U! Just to let U know that I just bought a Larry Ultimate pleasure pack for $125.00 from e-bay. Although it cost me a lot of money I'm really happy to owned part of your excellent work.

Anyway do our beloved Larry Laffer have a brother? If Yes... Maybe U can make a new game about his brother (Harry or Danny or ....) adventure looking for the missing Larry I know it sound a bit funny but Al, don't just waste your fabulous talent in the gaming world. We as your loyal fan are still waiting for your new work and joke Al

Best Regards

Mazli

Hi, Mr. Lowe!

Before I begin, I just need to thank you sincerely for all the hardwork you’ve done with the Leisure Suit Larry series. I don’t think I can ever forgive Sierra for what they did to that series, it’s a crime, really. Anyways, I know you probably hear this stuff a lot, (I visted your fans page and saw it for myself. You should feel proud that you can not only have so many fans who atually take the time to express their gratitude, but also that LSL 7 won “Best Adventure Game Ever”), so with that out of the way, I won’t go on about it.

Well, I know you’re probably very busy, so I won’t make this any longer. Write me back, if your schedule allows, but if you don’t, I want to you know that I’m still just as forever grateful for all of your hardwork. It paid off, in my opinion.

Sincerely Yours,

Dave Deist ;)

Couldn't you make more Larry games using a different name,   say like  harry?  Maybe change his looks a little or something?   I have all the Larry games (even Freddy Pharkas)   I think their are enough Larry lovers to make it worth your wild. We want larry back! If Dolly can have Dollywood, Kenny can have Kennywood, why can't Larry have Larrywood?  If you don't think this is real, go to www.dollywood.com

Dear Al

My name is Asbjørn Nørgaard. I am an 18 year old boy (not a Boy! I´m a man!) who loves Larry.

One day i was surfin´ around the internet, i found this odd site named vintage sierra. I saw they had a link to your website, so i thought: COOL!! After i had been browsing around your site, downloading som of the cool jazz musik, i saw the horrifying news.

Larry´s dead? I can’t believe what sierra have done! First they fire you, and then they will stop making copies of Larry games? My deepest sympathies goes to you Al. I hope you will find a way to make a new larry game, or at least to get the old ones out in the stores again. Coz to tell you the truth, i really miss larry. I mean, really! It´s really cool, that you have your own website. It´s really nice.

many regards

Asbjørn Nørgaard

p.s. Don´t you have some more of jazz mp3´s. I like them. They got a catchy swing, and i love jazz!

p.p.s. My name is so strange, because i'm from Denmark!!

You rule :D

Why the heck did sierra cancel Larry8? they are great games. Can't u get some other company/developer to release it man? I'm sure someone would. Go for LucasArt :D They are neat making that kinda games. I WANT larry 8! :D

Peace, take care!

Alexander Bekkelund

Hi,

First I want to say thank you and all the workers on the hit game Larry.

I’ve been following the game ever since it started, and I never stopped playing the game and I still does. My first question is why did Sierra stopped producing Larry? Me and lots of fans are still waiting for that game and we will never stop waiting till we see it alive.  And if they have no step what so ever in producing the game again, why not look for another company to franchise the game and the character? I mean Sierra is not doing that good in a business sense so may be they will let it go for a couple of hundred thousands.

I have an idea if things don’t go well. Why don’t you and the other staff working on the game bring the game alive again by doing the game online? I mean the games that are using Macromedia’s Shockwave are really impressive, I think there was a game call octogon I don’t remember it, but it was a nice game.

And why stop on PC development? Go on Consoles , With PS2, Xbox, and GameCube the game can be the next best thing.

Thanks,

M Al-ibrahim

hey al,

I've been a Leisure Suit Larry fan for some time now. I absolutely loved “Love for Sail” til i let my friend borrow it and he lost it a few years back. Practically broke my heart. Ever since then I’ve been looking for a replacement. Just wanted to give you my own personal thanks for all the laughter and good times.
