It pains me to know that Sierra has turned into something totally different from what everyone remembers. I should have done my research because then I would have known about the money problems (which you did tell me) and the new management. One of the top game design companies known for a slew of high quality games is now only known for two. Half-Life and of course your bouncing baby bachelor. There's even a site (I forgot which) that has a poll as to which company disappoints you the most. No surprise that it was Sierra. That hurts.

What I wanted to tell you is that one of these days it's going to blow up in everyone's face. I'm into most forms of entertainment. I'm working on a graphic novel, trying to get money for a film short, developing my own graphic adventure idea and even thinking about joining my friend on her website venture. All of this is on a very, I think the term is, grassroots level. I know what you're saying about money, but I'm still young and I want to love something before I go straight. Hopefully, I'll be able to do it for life (I'd love to hear your music).

What I see now is people lazily going about making everyone happy. There should be no such thing as a CGI Yoda! Sooner or later (probably later) we'll realize what's out there and demand some quality.

Every ten years the old generation starts to show itself in it's children. I'm asking only that you keep that wonderful imagination you have. If you look at Resident Evil, the brilliant Final Fantasy series and the many games out there with CG cut-scenes you'll see a little bit of the past there.

It's good to be social, don't get me wrong, but the multiplayer is becoming the standard. I'm sure you have DVD's that you and your family can watch. A good action movie that everyone can get excited over. There are, lurking somewhere in the collection, personal films that you can relate to. Video games are at that level, but they got here at the wrong time. In this age of 'what fad can we pimp next', the gamers are getting first rate systems that play third (or 97th) rate games. If you don't have a good series going, then throw some more patches on that broadband version of 'Don't Wait To See The Whites Of Their Eyes'.

If there are so many people in that vast cyber world then why is Larry alone (again!)? Larry is all alone again, but at the same time with everyone. Books and Films are one thing, but it's rare that a video game character can become it's own being. You are the only one I can think of who's done it. You served your purpose on this plane, I believe and made people smile.

You don't have to do it again. That's not what I'm saying. You should be a household name though.

I know what everyone wants and I want it too, but what I see is a talent, not a character. I'd like to see one more 'matured' version of Larry. Let him win and then go in peace. You, on the other hand are larger than the Internet. I don't want to see you get lost in the sea of search engines.

"Oh, I remember him. He made that game with that guy."

Not that there all bad, but some of these games have no heart. I remember when rap became accepted. When comic books became accepted. Before these video games go down I would love to see you and maybe Tim Schafer GET DOWN and do what Tony Alva and Tony Hawk did for skateboarding: Bring it to the forefront without letting it lose it's heart.

Maybe in my future I could develop one of your scripts into a movie (or give you all the money you want to make more games), but until then...

...you are etched in the mind of every old school gamer.

PS: You're not going to believe this, but my wife works for a financial company and one day, when greeting a client, she asked his name. It was Larry Laffer. What a geek!

Hi Al,

I read your interview with the German Magazine PC-Games and after i read it i cant find words to tell you how f**ked Sierra is. What the hell are they waiting for? I mean you created Larry and Designed Games for so long years and now they keep their fucking Copyrights in their fucking safes. And why dont you find another publisher? Well Al, If i become once rich, you can count on me!!

I have to tell you I hope you get to make another leisure suit larry game I will be the first in line to get it they really dont make walk yhrough games like that anymore most people are into those shoot um up games but I would rather sit down and play one of you creations to this day i still play 5 and love for sale I cant Find my original number 1 copy which i hate but what are you going to do its not they sell it anymore. Thank for taking the time to read this I just wanted to say I love your humor and work you put into The leisure series and I hope to see another with your name in the credits.

Hey Al,

Just wanted to let you know that as a loyal LSL player (learned to type on lsl 1 on my tandy 1000 in 1990) I really miss your stuff. You brought a true contrast (lsl/softporn vs, disney) to the gaming world in it's infancy, and since I lost track of you and Jane Jensen, I havent seen a good thing come out of Sierra since Half-Life, which isn' really in the same category as your single player masterpieces. On behalf of the gaming world: make fore stuff, I'll even help with sound, I have a degree in audio engineering (and I'm Canadian, so I can work cheap). Really though, just wanted to say, thanks for teaching me to tyepe!!!

Mike Bourgeault

Hi Al,

Or shall i say Mr. Lowe? I don't know. First of all imagine you can read all this "I love your Games" and "Your the greatest Designer" Stuff here. I think thats faster and more econimic ;)

And finally some ideas:    like i mentioned in the GB how about making a paypal account for "Save Larry Laffer". So we could probably get some Money for the Laffer Licence. I could sleep better if Larry's Name is in it's Dads hands ;)

And even if it won't be enough how about makin a Larry game without it. Gary Fleffner or sth like this. I can imagine that there will be friends and fans who develope for free. i'm common to it cuz i come from the MOD scene. There are great Free Engines on the Net. Oh btw. i do 3D Modeling as Hobby for a Mod. I will try a Larry Model soon, cuz i don't like Jason Zayas' Model very much. It's nice but 1st with today's technique there are more polygons and details possibile and i would make a 1:1 model of the Character in LSL7. He's really great with his big eyes and head shape, everything.

Hope i don't bore you. Maybe a little commercial break: Drink more Dr Pepper Cola !!! Yes, it's really great. Forget about Pepsi and Coke, only Dr Pepper has it's own unbelievable refreshing taste *grinning to the camera* (<- yes i love this stuff, good that i live near the Hollandish Border because Dr Pepper isn't produced in Germany)

Ok back to boring stuff: when there is a demo or running version of Gary Fleffner maybe Sierra would take it over. Although this kind of development is slow because the developers just conntact over the net (they live everywhere because there aren't all Skills availible for free next to your place) it's for free. If it gets better there will be more money and meetings and stuff, we do this at our MOD like this, and without any know VIP in our team we were in several Magazine's and TV Shows with our game althoug there is not even a playable BETA done.

I know a programmer who would probably join, he studies and is very good in codin. You can make any team you wish of course, but please make Larry 8. What am i saying this is just a suggestion, i think im dreaming again hehe. (Larry 9 will do it as well ;)

Regards Milho aka Blasius Floch

"i had a dream..." :)

Mr. Lowe,

Just wanted to say that I'm going to miss the Larry series.  That was one of the funniest games I have ever seen!  Do you have any plans on making a part 8 or finding the lost disk for part 4?  ... probably not... anyway, as a fan of your work, just wanted to say Hi ... appreciate the lighter side of tryin' to hook up with a girl, and hope you're having a great time with what you possibly could be doing now.   Do you still work for the game industry?

So without further ado and bothering you further, I'll say goodbye and thanks for the entertainment while it lasted!

-a fan named Shane

hey there.

you very certainly don't know me, but i've been playing your computer games pretty much since they started coming out all those years ago.

i was doing research for an oral presentation i have to do tomorrow morning - which is essentially about the death of the adventure game and was running some searches to see what kind of stuff i got back and your page was pretty literally one of the last i found while doing my search.

i wanted to say two things...the first is that i wholeheartedly concur with a lot of what you said in your article on the subject...and the second is thankyou for the very good times that you [and the pre-1998] set of programmers at sierra gave me as a game player.  i remember that one of my earliest dreams ever [and i still harbor it somewhere, although, not in the same form, certainly] was to come and work at sierra because back when i started playing computer games, they'd basically given me the kind of things i wanted to play - stories.  which i don't find so much outside of rpg's anymore.

i really do appreciate all the jokes and the many, many hours of entertainment your games provided.

good luck.

julian comley

Thanks a lot for the great games, Al, and thanks for the website as well. I have some fond memories of the Larry games and your webpage is like taking a walk down nostalgia lane.

I really think that if Myst never appeared, I'd probably be happily playing Larry 8 right now, with Sam & Max 3 and Monkey Island 5 awaiting its completion. It's quite amazing what damage one huge-selling, horribly flawed adventure game can do.

Hi Al!

I just want to tell you how much i've enjoyed your Larry-games and how sad I am to hear, that there wont be another one. Since I was six, I know its a bit early :-), I've played the game and always been looking forward to the sequel, when one was about to be released. Anyway, you made a game that I think is the best of games ever and Larry will always be remembered by me. Hope you can finish your piece of art someday with Leasure Suit Larry 8.

Best Regards

Thomas

I did a web search asking for stuff about the death of compuer games and your site came up. It did make for interesting reading.  I'm always curious to see what other people think about the whole issue...and to get an opinion from someone in the industry - that I have played games by - gave a whole new perspective on the subject.

I remember, very vividly, specifically buying (at great expense, in South Africa, at the time) an entire computer because i wanted to play space quest one.  I'd seen it running on a friend's machine one december holiday and saved up money and spoke to my parents about it and they were ok with the whole thing - and that's pretty literally how i got started with computer games - space quest one, king's quest three and some shareware.

Speaking from the outside looking in, i started having very bad feelings about the whole thing when i saw phantasmagoria for the first time. That's when i started wondering, seriously, where the whole thing was going.  What made me more worried (particularly about the adventure game as a genre) was The Seventh Guest.  I could, pretty literally, only see bad things coming out of that. The entire game, while graphically beautiful was merely a string of puzzles thrown together.  the point where i think i sudeenly realized that sierra was starting to have problems was when i saw Police Quest Four.

i wasn't as fond of Police Quest as i was of Space Quest particularly but since my sister got involved and liked the whole thing, i got her a copy and we started playing it together...and from about that point on, i knew something was missing.  after that it was pretty much all downhill for me, with regards to Sierra.

I'd already decided that i didn't like first person shooter games [i played the entire first episode of Doom and thought, 'ah.  wait a second.  i just wasted a week or so of my life shooting things...?'] so when Half-Life came along and King's Quest Eight did shortly after that and then Gabriel Knight Three [i'd really liked Gabriel Knight up to about then...] it was pretty much over.

Your point about the 'me too' games is very accurate here - i just found that Sierra were starting to do things 'wrong' and were letting the people go that had made them.  it was frustrating, looking fromt he outside...seeing how it was going...and knowing that it could never go back...like you, i still kind of have hopes for Sierra working things out and getting the old franchises going again, but... my hopes dimmed, after seeing King's Quest Eight/Quest For Glory Five/Gabriel Knight Three.

It is sad.

Hi Mr. Lowe.

I just found your site. I have the Larry ultimate pleasure pack (I was fortunate enough to find it last April), and I saw your site on it. So I thought I’d give it a try.

I love the Larry games! I remember playing those years ago, before I was really allowed to play them (I’m only 25 now.) Now my biggest problem is getting them to play on windows XP!

I don’t know why Sierra ever stopped making the good games. Some, like Larry, they won’t even sell anymore. I have been trying to find the “quest for glory” games forever, and recently I was able to find good old “Colonels Bequest”.  There are not too many adult oriented games anymore, Actually, I don’t remember there ever really being too many. But, Larry was always a great game. Besides the issue of getting Larry to work On Win XP, It’s figuring them out! I’m totally stuck on Larry 5. Are there still guides available? I haven’t checked your whole site yet, so maybe you mention that?

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I hope to hear from you again in the gaming world. Maybe since you can’t do Larry again without Sierra, you can start a new game, perhaps the adventures of some new fella, or woman. Whatever you do, I can’t wait to get it! I think your games are great, and it’s a shame you don’t own the rights to your own creation.

Take care.

Vince

Hi,

I've spent about 6 or 7 years almost totally out of the "games" world wrapped up in "internet" stuff...now that that bubble has burst I find myself with plenty of time on my hands, and decided to seek out a great new adventure game for my new computer, and have some real fun...(last time I had a cutting edge game capable machine was about '93 and I remember playing SQ4, KQ5, LSL5 and like...) To cut a long story short I ended up downloading a bunch of old Sierra adventures, which I was shocked to find languishing on "abandonware" sites, with nothing even remotely like them available commercially.

I hope you don't take offense at my technical theft of what might be some of your property, but unfortunately it has become the only way to obtain any of the classic adventure games like Sierra and Lucasfilm releases. They are now commercially non-existant. I found Sierra's own site totally lacking even an "adventure" category... let alone the slightest mention of any "Quest" beyond Masks of Eternity - which didn't really catch my interest.

This poses an interesting question. What is the status of this "abandoned" software. Movies and books have tended to "keep" and can be constantly re-released, rented on video, DVD, etc. Things like classic James Bond movies, Star Wars movies, Tolkien, even books by Stephen King or Clive Cussler, say, still remain valuable intellectual property decades after their initial release. The first Stephen King novel is still just as satisfying an experience for the new reader as his latest "bestseller"... and just as profitable for the publisher, who still no doubt still stocks it in bookstores. Lucas can seemingly endlessly tweak and re-release Star Wars and make more money on each new "special edition" than the last. Films with Sean Connery & Roger Moore as 007 still regularly crop up on network television, faithfully reaping in royalties as the original actors enter old age.

Yet Leisure Suit Larry languishes in the land of the lost code... virtually disowned by Sierra, his creator "banished", so to speak, without any rights to the creation. He is available only on the "underground", if you can even make him run on your new-fangled PC. As I see it, the only way I could get any reimbursement to you, as the creator of any further Larry games I play, would be to write out a personal check to "Al Lowe" and ask you for somewhere to send it... My mind boggles at this weird situation. Any thoughts?

I have to say that I have always admired you as the creative force behind the Larry games. Only upon discovering this web site did I realize how much you'd contributed to so many of the games I enjoyed over the years. Man, you wore a lot of hats there! More respect to you!

Anyway,

I have always enjoyed the idea of "adventure games". Even before personal computers were common I played paper based RPGs, and loved "Fighting Fantasy" type adventure books. What attracted me to these games was the idea of an original world with a story, plot advancement, characters and objects you could interact with and problems to solve, all integrated into the advancing story with you controlling the actions of the main character.

Sure, there was combat and some mechanics, but they were supposed to "serve" the story-telling. As the roleplaying world progressed, it actually became good gamesmaster practise to hide as much of the "background" dice rolling as possible from the players, fudge dice rolls to keep the plot moving along, and encourage players to use good roleplaying and ingenuity to get out of situations. Some systems even dispensed with the dice altogether and relied on the gamesmasters decided opinion as to what was and wasn't possible.

When the computer gaming industry matured sufficiently that identifiable genres like "adventure" or "RPG" became common, I found it interesting that the supposed computer "RPGs" tended to focus on mechanics, randomness and combat, with character advancement largely increased scores and little real sense of story or plot flow beyond hacking maze after maze of monsters and gathering generic treasure items.

"Adventure" games largely dispensed with the mechanics and combat and focused on creating real individual worlds and locations with atmosphere, plot, characters that integrate with the story, and solving logic/lateral thinking based problems with interaction between objects and characters in the game world.

It was these adventure games attracted me the most when I got access to a computer. The day I first saw and played Space Quest II, the first Sierra graphic adventure I ever saw, I was hooked. I felt I had discovered the "ideal" computer game format, from my point of view. Lush graphics, the best possible for a computer of the day, individually drawn for every scene, wandering around like a vast movie set with things to do and play with in all sorts of ways.

And, ironically, this was what I thought of as a 3D graphic adventure, as you could wander around objects in a seemingly real 3D third person space. It was different from first person 3D, but to my mind better, more immersive, more like a movie than a simulation. This was how games should be. I didn't miss the fighting and combat... it was more fun to get around monsters and things with cunning rather than arbitrary point scores or arcade skills. In fact I found that some games like Monkey Island, where you could hardly ever die, were actually more fun. Also I found that the Quest for Glory series was (minus the corny humor) closer to the spirit of original "tabletop" roleplaying games with a proper setting and campaign purpose, than the supposed "true RPGs" that were being released. Combat was there, but well integrated, not TOO much hassle, and not too reliant on arcade skills.

And when my Dad said I could play Larry 1 if I could answer the quiz - and I got it right, yeah! Great game. I enjoyed all the Leisure Suit Larry games I played immensely. When I read somewhere on this site that they are some of the best adventure games ever, I have to agree. LSL2 in particular stands out in my mind as a classic. So many locations, so many cool problems, something different always happening somewhere different, and such a great ending.

I spent years trying to figure out how to do a game like these, never coming close, as I had nowhere near the resources or knowledge at the time. So I played a lot of Sierra and other adventure and role playing games, programmed my own small text adventures and basic 2D graphic games, finished high school, got a job, got into the internet and multimedia, learnt a lot about graphics and animation and design and music, got a degree in multimedia design, worked in the internet industry until the bubble burst, and now find myself with lots of free time... and in a world where I realize the gaming scene has changed dramatically.

All of Sierras "star" designers gone - no more Al Lowe, Two Guys from Andromeda, Lori Cole... no more "adventure" games, King's Quest a first person action game with plenty of hack-n-slash and platform leaping...

Somewhere along the line the arcade action game has merged with the RPG, which has merged with the simulation into the sort of Quake style game that has taken over the industry. "3D" has become this odd buzzword that means exactly what the industry decides to define it as, but is is "must have" therefore "de-rigeur", no matter what. And currently it is defined as Quake style engines with first person 3D. Total focus seems to be on as fast a frame rate in real time as possible, with as much realistically rendered carnage and blood as possible, with blasting the crap out of everything the only gratification to be obtained. Basic gameplay remains unchaged from the ancient "Gauntlet" game - run around level after level of anonymous maze blasting everything in sight.

In this whole mess somewhere the entire adventure game concept either merged into this 3D first person aracde action game, or disappeared completely... no-one is exactly sure. Problems degenerated from relatively "realistic" interaction with an environment to rubiks cube type "puzzles" and mechanical problems involving pushing the rights buttons or knobs or whatevers the rights way in the right combination. This is really a completely different sort of game altogether, not problem solving.

Even the venerated Kings Quest has turned in this direction. But as I said, I'm not really that attracted to the game. I played both Ultima Underworlds ten years ago, realtime first person 3D is nothing new. I remember when it used to be plain vectors on an 8-bit system... and how revolutionary it was when computers were fast enough to actually fill them in with solid colors in real-time.

But the graphic adventure was always a seperate category that stood apart from, and in my mind above, these other games. I considered third person view with background art to be an artistic directional choice, not just a technical limitation to one day be overcome. The quality of the art in a graphic adventure was always the best of any game. Nothing else has ever captured the same individual atmosphere of each game so well, and allowed such exploitation of artistic flair and style over mere technical limitation.

Even now, if I look at screenshots of Kings Quest 7, the quality and richness of the imagery amazes me, but if I look at KQ8... it looks like something I could knock together in five minutes using Bryce... sure I know I can move around real time and all, but the individual detail is all gone.

Real time rendering simply cannot compete with what can be done given some time, either rendering a really detailed atmospheric picture with correct texturing and scaling and lighting, or getting an artist to draw something good. Even with 3D rendering, the result will always be better if the computer can take some time to do it properly and render really detailed models - good images take hours to render, not 1/24th of a second.

Besides, none of this is reason to dispense with plot and some decent involving puzzles.

Anyway, as I now have the resources and experience needed to actually develop something myself, I would like to give it a go. I've been rendering background graphics and models that I am happy with and would like to start building into a world to explore.

I was inspired by "fan" remakes of Kings Quest 1, redone in VGA with the AGS engine. Someone else is planning to do an SQ7, now that Sierra won't... Now I'm not actually interested in remaking some Sierra property, but I do like the concept, particularly the later icon driven adventures.

I've got engines like AGAST which can create graphic adventures, and I can load my backgrounds, program interfaces and objects and watch in awe as a sprite finally wanders around my own adventure world. (Eh.. if only I had these tools ten years ago!) Of course I have all my other pro graphics software and stuff, as well as a home music studio and recording equipment, plenty of development experience in other stuff, so I figure I can cover all the bases technically. Artistically I'll probably need some assistance with some things, as I'm a decent background and object artist and interface designer, but  poor at people, realistic animals, their movements and animation, etc.

I plan to use high resolution, 24 bit color backgrounds with full anti-aliasing of sprites, good quality sounds and music, plenty of close up shots, and to try and make the interface as intuitive yet flexible as possible. Beyond that, everything is still on the drawing board.

But I noticed that you say on your site that you have some definite ideas on where adventure games should go.("...I've got some great ideas for revitalizing adventure games...") I can't exactly claim to be a publisher with a big budget ready to go, but I was wondering if you'd still be willing to share a few general ideas on where you think the genre should go, and how a modern adventure game should be done. I'm not asking for your secret plot ideas or how to make the next Larry game ;-) Just your ideas on the whole "3D/action/RPG/shoot-em-up/adventure" that we have now, whether you think a traditional adventure, albiet with modern high res (but largely pre-drawn/rendered) graphics and quality sound, can compete today, not necessarily as #1 best-seller award winning mega-game, but as a quality experience that many gamers would enjoy, perhaps even be commercially viable on a small but reasonable scale (i.e. paying production costs, not earning billions) if marketted and distributed properly. Or would you see the adventure evolve in a new, as yet unexplored direction?

I have a nasty suspicion about the gaming industry, which is that the whole thing comes down to expense.

Producing beautiful background screens and rendered animations is time consuming, requires real artists, and is thus expensive. Producing basic shapes rendered with generic textures is easy and faster, needs less "artistic" input as the "computer does the work" ;-), and is thus cheap.

Designing plots and characters with depth and problems to solve is time consuming, and requires real writers and people with ideas, and is thus expensive. Designing generic levels and populating them with generic "monsters" to kill and generic "puzzle" problems is easy, faster, doesn't need talented writers, and is much cheaper.

Was it really lack of interest/demand that killed adventure games, or just cost of production vs shoot-em ups?

Am I walking down a darkened dead end alley, or can you throw me a torch here?

Thanking you now for all the great games, and in advance for any reply I may receive,

Caleb Fuller

Hey Al,

It is really an honour to have a chat with the man who gave me my education with Leisure Suit Larry Series.

I read the article about Larry being dead and that the "Ultimate pleasure Pack" ended up an "Utimate Failure Pack", or so I believe. ( How did it sell by the way?)

I played my first Larry when I was 5 , Leisure suit Larry 3 , 'cos my mom was a technical support person for Unisys South Africa, I was into computers from the time my eyes opened for the first time. Larry was a big hit in South Africa amongst gamers for years and I still have people today asking me where they can find stores that sell copies of the series, and it makes me wanna cry when I say that larry is no more.

I was "educated" by the likes of Larry, and his quest partners from the kings quest, hero's quest, eco quest, space quest, series'.. you name 'em I played 'em. There is not a single adventure I have not played, that is why I am so passionate patti, about all this whole "Larry being iced" saga.

I think sierra are damn ungrateful and should hang their heads in shame for discarding the very characters who made them what they are, Its an outrage!! If it weren't for you and the Williams' they would have been out collecting trash today!!....You all are the legacy of Sierra.

Anyway, they do not have an excuse for what they did, it was plain stoopid.  I mean, Lucasarts released a press article that they are re-introducing the Full Throttle Title because it is the most-beloved classic, I quote Simon Jeffrey - Lucasarts President :  "We can't think of a better brand or character to lead LucasArts' charge into a new era of original game development. Ben so perfectly symbolizes our legacy and yet has just the right mix of attitude and edge to appeal to a new generation of game players."

Why the hell can't Sierra do the same...Their dumb, dumb, dumb.......The just can't market a product those dummies. Have you approached Lucasarts perhaps, do you think they might be interestedin ressurrecting our little buddy? I bet there are millions of supporters out there who would back you. Let me know your thoughts

Have a nice day !!!

Keep it up Al - I am 25 and I feel sorry for all those kids who will never really know what a good adventure game is. Made of weird things like 'scenario', 'plot', 'real scanned drawings', 'fun'! You've done something to be proud of, thanks again

Dear Al Lowe, Hello. My name is Jennifer and I am a huge fan of your's. I replay the LSL series all the time and just got Freddy Pharkas. (can't get the theme song out of my head.) I thought maybe you'd be interested in knowing that Larry kindof had a role in my marriage. You see along time ago, when I still dating, I met this guy. We went on a couple of dates and to my dismay he didn't seem to have a sense of humor. He was sweet, kind, good looking, and all that jazz, but not humorous at all. I was seriously contemplating leaving the relationship over this. ( I know, it's a little shallow. But who wants to be with someone they can't laugh with.) We went over to his place and he showed me some of his games. six were LSL games. He went on and on about how much he liked them. Laughing and joking on the things that happened in them. And I realized, hey, he was just shy. You have to have a good sense of humor if you love LSL. I loved (and still do) them too. Long story slightly shorter, we married 1 year later and have been playing and replaying the games ever since. So Larry saved a wonderful relationship. I truely hope Sierra someday figures out what they lost. LSL is a lot cleaner than shootum ups. I hope you are someday able to make another one. Thank you for your great programming skills, wonderful sense of humor, and caring ways(as evident in the making of this site.) It has been a plesure playing your games and going through your site. Fondest Regards, Jennifer M. Gipson

Oh, how tragic things are these days. Games use to be fun. Games use to have content. Now it’s all about blowing people away on the Quake engine (although that is fun too). I think it’s truly sad that Sierra swept under the carpet the people who made them what they are. No more Larry games, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, or any other of the great games that had the word “quest” in the title. It took me a looong time to find Larry games. And I even found The Quest for Glory games on a classic trash website. Unfortunately, they stopped posting the games since they say it breaks some copyright law (even though Sierra doesn’t even sell those games anymore, so why do they care?) I think AL made some damn good games; I’m still looking for Freddy Pharkas, Frontier Pharmacist, though I doubt I’ll ever get to play it. I just hope Mr. Lowe can once again produce the great games that use to grace our PC’s. Who knows, Maybe we can see a comedy slash action, western, RPG/Shooter built on the Quake engine some day. ;)

larry in the land of the lounge lizards was my first adventure game on a XT with 640 kb RAM and monochrome monitor. i loved that character... i loved the girl in the hot tub even better, i think her name was eve (it's been a while)... i think the balding nerd looser in larry 2 was the most adorable character type (graphically) of all times in adventures... i've been a great sierra fan thanks to you even though the hero's quest games are my favorite... i became an adventure games player thanks to you... i really don't like most of todays adventure games. i wish that games like the ones you made could still be around for me to play... mr Al Lowe THANK YOU sir!

sierra are so lame, dropping LSL without no reason.. there aren't many companys hwo make these kind of humor-adventure games anymore.. the only one i know off is Lucasarts (thinking of Escape from monkey island) .. wonder if they would be intressted in LSL?

Al! You have put so much work into creating such an excellent game, leaving fans craving for the next episode. I am really sad to see that Larry 8 won't be made, if only we could convince Sierra. It's so different to all other games and to find one to compare would be impossible. And just as the graphics and effects were getting so good......a very witty game, indeed. Well, I could go on and on about how passionate I feel about the game being cancelled, but I think you get the idea!

I have loved every game you've created Al. I grew up on Larry. I wish I could do something to convince Sierra to bring him back -- the rich scenes in that game were billions of times more attractive than the rendered texture-mapped graphics of today. There was nothing like it and there is nothing like it. I pray for the day Sierra wakes up and gives LSL8 the green light. All the best to you and yours, Seth

I want the shoe camera in Larry 8!!! Please. Why don't you make such a account like PayPal or sth like thin on the net for weird fans like me to donate. probably this will make up the needed 3 or 4 .. millions? damn! that's a lot of money. but at least with you can spend the 3000 , 30000 or more bucks for such important things like a new saxaphon or some cool drinks on hawaii grin. you deserve it. regards B. Its been a long time since i shaked your hand and you gave me an autographe on my fresh Lesiure Suit Larry7 Copy. I think it was in December 1996, you where on a promo tour through Germany, inside a small crowded Shop. Inside it was hot and sweaty, outside frozen cold. I am sure you wont remember, but for me it was an important moment. Since 97 the computer games are getting much more boring. Its a pity that Larry vanished into the darkness of software history. We all need a hero like him... I will always remember the good Sierra times: Leisure Suit Larry was my first Computer Game and i will never forget all the fun and laughter i had. Not to mention that i learned English through these Parser Games. Best whishes from a good fan of your workxx.

Hello, Mr Lowe! ^_^ I've been one of the greatest Leisure Suit Larry-Fans for a long time a few years ago. Maybe you can't remember of the event, that i'll try to describe to you now but i do much :D I guess it was in the year 1996, when i was a little boy: I finally got my first own computer and i read about a new adventure called Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail! My parents got mad, when they found out that i've become a Laffer-Fan (i was 13 years at that time and we germans have strict orders which concerns sex and stuff O_o) but i didn't mind that much... I just loved the funny adventures of Larry and always laughed so much when he got in trouble again!! Anyway there was the day in 96, it was December (almost christmas) when i've heared that Al Lowe, the "God of Larry" would visit a computer games shop to give some autographes! Well and then i stood there in front of you and i got a Leisure Suit Larry 7 Demo with your name on the CD. The next day there was a article about you in a regional newsletter and it had been written that you have been wondering about the fact, that there would be so many young Larry Fans! :D Well i guess many people really didn't knew who you were, and they just came to you to get somethin for free! :P But it was and it still is a great honour to be the owner of that CD with your signs on it! Can you still remember of that? I guess it was a promotion tour for LSL 7 after all. Anyway, it is really sad that it has become so quiet about you and your work. I HATE SIERRA FOR THAT! >:( I hope there will be a publisher that will allow you to work out your ideas. Maybe it just isn't the time now for Larry. You can say that adventures have become a dead genre right now... Well, so much to tell i guess. Friendly Greetings from a loyal fan of yours from Germany (excuse my terrible english) Sincerely René Hintz P.S. I don't know if you could do me that favour, but i would be really happy if you could mail me and tell me if you can remember our "date" ;-D It would be a great honour for me!!!

Hi AL I am 28 years old and I am playing sierra games since 86 86/87 was a good year that year I started to play Larry, space quest and king quest games. Since then I played all your games.and many more from your company sierra. The gaming experience changed my life and as an adult I decided to find my way in the gaming industry. I am not talented or even funny as you so I decided to distribute sierra games in Israel. My first dealing was with George nikas and after short dealing bug multisystem started to distribute the sierra games in Israel. Before bug mahcsevet distributed the sierra games in Israel. After that havas forced me to deal with France and not the us. I entered the business only in mid 99 after sierra was closed. So I never had the chance to speak with you or Roberta.(2 of my roll model). In any case I just wanted to tell you that you and Roberta shaped me as a person and I feel I need to Thank you from the bottom of my heart. . Yours eyal katz

Al, Leisure Suit Larry games were the best. You and Sierra brought my friends and I lots of entertainment. We're only six people but we've all vowed to never buy a Sierra Game again. Sierra really needs to unload their license on Larry because there are a lot of angry game players who are like us who really felt we built a relationship with the gamemaker. We've enjoyed other Sierra games but the Sierra mark will never be brought into our homes again until Larry is allowed to roam free again. P.S. There are more like us cause we are really getting impatient on waiting for Larry or your next game.

Hey Al, you rock! You are truly a generous person to continue to humor your Leisure Suit Larry audience at no charge! I'm grateful for all the freebies that you've put on your site for downloads. I'm so grateful that Leisure Suit Larry lasted long enough to be able to see him actually animated and talking in Leisure Suit Larry 7! Whoever got the guy from Laugh In to narrate that one and Space Quest 6 is a genius. I love those humorous asides with for just about everything. I used to love to click on things that weren't of a vital nature to solve the game for the narrator's funny remarks. I used to love to solve the great Sierra adventure sagas with buddies from college. When none of us had dates we'd crowd around a computer and solve these together. They'll be fond memories of Al Lowe, Roberta Williams and the Two Guys from Andromeda. I wish you all success in future endeavors. Truly thanks for the memories.

Al, I will always remember a LSL game (tho I can't recall which one) in which I was standing close to a cliff (and the always present drop to a Purina Checkerboard Square product) when the game told me I needed to stand closer to the cliff and chuckled. I had been at the game since 3 in the afternoon and it was now 2 in the morning. Really broke me up. You are a deeply weird and strangely twisted. Thanks for all the games. Roy

I saw your interview on The Screen Savers today. That brought back such fond memories for me. Sitting their for hours playing LSL1, LSL5, and Freddy Pharkas. I used to laugh my butt off playing those games. I still play games today but I miss the days of the true adventure game. I still remember one time playing Freddy Pharkus, and it came to a part where the horses in town were passing gas, I remember my father coming into the computer room and laughing his butt off at the noises he heard because he thought it was me, when it was the game making the noise. For a few years after that I would play the game and at that piont in the game I would lose it and crak up. Sadly I movied shortly after that and lost all my computer games I had at the time. But I hope someday I can find a place that has the LS Ultimate Pleasure Pack and Freddy Pharkus(CD Version), so I can buy them and once again enjoy your wonderful games. Thank you once again for have the great sense of humor that you do, this world needs more laughter.

As an old Apple 2 fanatic, I love seeing guys like you being accessible these days—we never heard from the programmers when their software was popular! Well, I was actually glad that you haven't vanished with the closing of Sierra Studios ! It's a neat site, it's fun to look around there ! Only two things: First, I found out that in the "Modern book of Health and Hygiene" (The Manual) there is something called "Ipecac", which I also know from Monkey Island 3... I don't know how it got there... Second, I'd whish that the cover of the Black Cauldron game would be a little bigger to look at. Anyway, I whish everyone who's got there (to al Lowe's site) much fun ! It's a neat site !

I must say, being a neanderthal like myself, I finally hooked up to the web... I'd say I was 5 years late for the appointment. I feel it a privelege to be able to tell you, Mr. Lowe, that you have been the man that kept a smile on my face and a laugh in my heart on those 'days' at work and at home. I thank you for bringing much needed humor into my life and am eternally grateful. At times I felt like I was really Larry Laffer and he was just a window into my life for all to see. Even if the blinds were closed. ^_^ I see no need for a 'Who's Al Lowe' section. If anyone doesn't know you, they're probably dead or don't have enough humor in their diet. Well, before I completely take up the whole guestbook, I wish you only the best and hopes of making more ground-breaking software for people to enjoy. Thanks again and keep laughing!

Leisure Suit Larry was the best series of games that I have ever played. It was funny and challenging at the same time. I enjoyed every adventure I had with Larry and wish that there were more games like it today.

I admire your talent and definitely will buy your future games... Sierra can't just take Larry away, and if so, I personally will boycott their other games for the rest of my life...:o)

Hi mr Lowe, How are you doing? How is it with larry and passionate patti? I bought the larry collection (without Larry 7 snik.. snik.. :-( ) I read the offical book of leisure suit larry special edtion. I would like to thank Ralph Roberts for helping you and Larry. The book is great ! Larry is my favourite character. He is cool and is always curius about girls. But it goes always wrong with the girls.. I laughed a lot with all larry games. I think that there will be no games like this be developed. Only Al Lowe can make it happen. Passionate Patti is a great girl of my heart. (oops sorry larry .I meant she is nice.) Patti and Larry fits together. I have played only the demo of larry 7. (craps table with Drew. .. whaaaoo She is HOT) I won of her.But then the game ends.. snik. I searched the game everywhere in the stores. But it isn't available anymore. I checked at Sierra But they don't sell larry games anymore. Why? Mr Al Lowe where can I get a copy of Larry 7? I don't have a visa or a mastercard.I just have cash (Euro) and a regalur bank account. I would like to thank all Larry developers for creating a cool game! And of course Larry and Patti! Dang Mr. Lowe. I have much respect for you. My childhood days as a gamer has brought me to receiving my Computer Engineering B.S. degree. In just a two weeks I will be done. I owe a lot of my talents to you because without your gaming in the 80s, my interest would be small. LSL, Donald Duck!!! I can't believe you made Donald Duck. I use to play that game like crazy on my 286. I actually stumbled on your site by accident from ganksoft.com. It would be an honor if you could sign my guestbook at http://CesarRamirez.com. The best of luck to you. A tip would be nice too for a programmer starting out in the corporate world. God Bless.

Get more!!! :) IMHO, you should have the "all your base" flash around too. LSL was a terrific humoristic quest game cough I got me some! cough, I cherish it forever. Now I can see how come it was so easy for you to come with all the cough twisted cough ideas for LSL : great sense of humor to last for ages! Keep it going forever! thump up And erm, welp, it's a self requested, make another LSL sequel! :D

Hej there, nice page! It's good to see the man behind the Larries is still active :). I can still remember the day I first typed "open door" and didn't understand a thing of the whole game. Of course, I was only 8 years old then, playing the game at my uncle's place who put me behind his computer probably to get rid of me :) Now, after having played all larries, one after another, I can still work my way through the first one without having to result to a walkthrough :) Anyway, keep on the good work and thanks for all the effort in the Larry games.

Hey al! whydoncha create a new game that can beat sierra and even larry........ you can create a character even funyer than larry was it can be a third world man and it can be a new and delicious story ( somtehing that larry haven´t) we all know that a larry 8 will be imposible until sierra wants to produce it, , ..... but whydoncha make a little preview game that can be downloading on the intewrnet pages.... liek your friends pages, ....... It is risque but will you ever do a computer game???...... you have to give a last chanca about larry...... we can call it.... FRANK or the "venezuelan comun man Francisco"... i tell you im form Venezuela and i´ve ever heard nothing about venezuelan beaver cheese!!!......i dunno i think you can make an intent and create a new game laki larry kind it could be relationated qith larry.... it could be a larry but a new century larry...... well...... i tlaked too much, , thank you al!

I gotta say i'm quite upset at sierra about not going ahead with Lsl8 because they think they wouldn't make any money. That is a joke. they would make SOOO much more money that what the cost is, LSL has such a big fan based all over the world it's unbelievable to not consider making another one. IF i was able to buy them out that would be the first game i would go ahead with, but we can always dream. When i finished Lsl7 and seen that there was another larry game coming out i couldn't wait for it but i hear this. :( I would guarantee everything i have that LSL8 would be the #1 seller. If i have to keep e-mailing them everyday to bring "THE MAN" back then so be it. I hope sierra can get their heads out of their arses and remember who they make the games for and who buys them. They should start listening to the public about what THEY want!!! Sorry it's long but i had to get it off my chest. :)

I wonder if Sierra knew that on Morpheus/Kazaa, Leisure Suit Larry 1 VGA is being downloaded by someone every 5 minutes? Sierra is losing it, that's why they're about to go bankrupt, they don't listen to what people want, they tell us what we want and thats why they lose. Al Lowe, if I was you, i'd try to get your rights to LSL back and go with a company that doesn't get its head stuck up its arse. LSL is a pure winner and its being killed because of some ignorant morons at Sierra. Don't get me wrong, they used to be the greatest, but it feels like someone has taken over the show and ruined it for everyone.

I was looking for Larry software as I still have most of it in the original boxes from the early Sierra years but I am missing one or two sets of the original floppies. I am the custodial parent of my seven year old grandson who has ADDHD and has severe learning problems. I have been searching for ways to help him learn to concentrate and to use his fine motor skills. So we started to play my old King's Quest and Hero's Quest games. I would love to be able to play the 3rd and fourth game of the Hero's Quest with him because he loves them and they are really helping him. They have noticed a great change in him at school since we have started playing them. His dexterity is better and so are his fine motor skills and he is learning patience (slowly but it is better). I am on a disablitly pension and when the games came out and I was working then I bought them. I had both a 5 ¼ and a 3 ½ drive then so I gave the 3 ½ inch disks to a friend and he was to give them back when he played the games but he gave them away. My 5 ¼ inch drive has since died and I have not been able to find another. So I am out the games because he gave the disks away instead of returning them. SO I was hoping Sierra would have abandoned them so I could download them but no such luck. I have only spent money on Sierra games since I started because they are the only ones I have found worth the price they charge. I wish I could afford to buy new ones to replace them but can't so we will have to make do with what we have. We will check out these games but want to thank you for sharing them with us. It is greatly appreciated especially by someone like us. So thank you for your fine work and keep it up. Heather

I want to thank you personally for creating the game and urge you to consider bringing more to your longing fans. I'm glad this boring world still holds inspiring people such as yourself!

We purchased a 486 computer for our daughter to practice on before she gets a new one for Christmas. She says Winnie The Pooh is her favorite game because it has such funny jokes. Thanks for the good work (and the laughs)

All this time, and I never even bothered to check the net whether LSL8 even existed. I've been checking CD stores every month. I really missed the good ol' Larry games... especially the remake of the 1st. :) I salute you Al for a remarkable game! I sure hope you'd make more games of Larry. Hmmm... how 'bout a cartoon series (PG-13)? Now THAT's an idea. :)

I´m a spaniard guy, so please forgive my english. Althought I´m young, I´ve played LSL games since I knew about them, including LSL1 text command mode, and I´ve enjoyed a lot with them. Thank you very much, Al, for all those good times we had in front our computers playing your games, and please dont give it up. We´re waiting for more fun!

I had been looking for the old Black Cauldron game for a long time. It was the first graphic adventure game I'd ever played on the PC...long before I even got my own. I had played the early King's Quests on my Apple IIc, but The Black Cauldron blew me away! I still credit this game with developing my love of reading, because I just had to go read the book that inspired what was at the time and has always remained one of my favorite games. Thanks Al! I never even would've guessed it was you behind that game! Keep up the great work!

the site is nice, cool design, perfect jokes, free ol' AL Lowe games (but i still wanna LSL's...legally i mean, the ones i have whre downloaded from abandonware sites) so keep on..... and put softporn on the downloads plz (and someday sierra will lose the LSL rights - that means you can release some source codes, and distribute your perfect games =) and that applies for freddy pharkas)

Hi Al! I really miss the LSL series. I remember watching my friend's older brother play LSL1 when I was 8 years old. It was a lot of fun. Are you ever going to make another computer game? Please do and LSL8! The adventure games these days aren't what they used to be back in the golden days of Sierra's AGI and SCI games... You're my favourite programmer ever! Thanks for all the laughs. The world is again a far too serious place. I started buying Larry with #3, and have even managed to convince my wife that it is the best series of games ever made. We not only need 8, but 9, 10, and 11...

It's a shame that Sierra doesn`t know a good thing when they got it. Would still like to see Larry 8. Hope you can come up with a way to finish it and get it out on the market. your frind JG Anderson
